Diplomat’s Apprentice Kindle Edition
The best laid plans . . . Fall apart when family gets involved!
Anwyn’s family has always assumed that she’d follow in the footsteps of her illustrious mother and uncle as a diplomat and eventual head of state. But Anwyn is an impulsive rule-breaker, and she’s made other plans: getting off her home planet and seeing the galaxy after training as a starship pilot.
Persuaded to go with her uncle on one diplomatic mission, Anwyn arrives at a planet in the midst of a violent uprising.
Space battles, daring rescues, dramatic chases, firefights and yes, even a bit of diplomacy, all make for a more exciting trip than Anwyn could have imagined. For her uncle has a hidden past that comes to light when they run into a small, specialized band of freelance agents with their own agenda, who know her uncle far too well.
Anwyn will find unexpected allies and dangerous adversaries. But she will need to learn to think before she acts if she wants to help her uncle and survive her journey as a Diplomat’s Apprentice?

About the author
![LJ Dix](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/S/amzn-author-media-prod/hsncpf2997n53ef99m49bab0k._SY600_.jpg)
LJ Dix was raised by a lover of books of all kinds and had free access to her mother's library as soon as she could read. Her mother also loved science fiction and encouraged LJ's lifelong love of sci-fi and fantasy. LJ's first published series is based on stories she told her children during long drives to visit family in an attempt to forestall the "are we there yet?" syndrome.
One of the greatest challenges she met when writing fiction again years later was making the transition from academic writing after achieving two advanced degrees. LJ holds an MBA, but her academic area of interest is global supply chains, specifically container shipping. Interplanetary trade shows up in many of her sci-fi books as a fun way to bring together her two areas of interest.
As an animal lover, animals also appear in many of her books. Her three cats currently run the household.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2025What better tribute for a son to his mother to write down stories his mother told him, while he was growing up. I am impressed with this author's work and look forward to the next book of the series. The plot is easily followed and straightforward and the premise is showing the main character that diplomacy is nowhere near as staid and boring as she envisioned. Her doubts were taken care of and her adventures were risky, usually because of her own fault in being impetuous. Youth! I most certainly recommend this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2024The first two chapters were phenomenally good - full of action, exciting, and well written.
Beginning with Chapter 3, however, Anwyn, the main character of DIPLOMAT’S APPRENTICE, shows herself to be a loose cannon who has no respect for orders or even for requests by older and wiser loved ones. At 18, she has a rather typical teenager’s belief that she knows it all and can’t be seriously hurt no matter how impetuously she behaves. No one disciplines her. She blithely breaches high level security, even taking and piloting a fighter plane in the middle of a space battle! These points move the book from a serious story into the fairy tale realm which was a huge disappointment for me.
EXCELLENT YOUNG ADULT TALE.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2024This first book introduces you to a family of characters. Anwyn has graduated from school and has a definite career path that she wants to follow. However, her family has other ideas for her future. She lets herself get talked into going on just one diplomatic mission with her uncle before making a final decision. She thinks diplomatic stuff is boring. Doesn’t turn out that way as real life sends her a curve ball in the form of a rebellion. But what is behind it? You’ll enjoy reading this book as you figure out who are the good guys & who are not. I can’t wait to read the next book to see the next step in Anwyn’s personal development as she experiences academic learning (pilot’s school) versus what the world’s real life experiences throw at her this time.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2024Congratulations to L.J. Dix for this really amazing series. It’s hard to find such an interesting and exciting author who not only writes intelligently but also provides top rated plots, characters and excitement in the stories. I’m really looking forward to the next book in the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2024This reminds me a lot of a number of juveniles from the 60s and 70s, only with a female protagonist. Very lightweight, but suitable for tweens. It is not a bad read for adults if you accept that limitation.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2024Great fresh story. Main characters are fun and engaging. Secondary characters bring diversity and complexity. Love that the prologue introduces the reader to the world (less confusion yay!). Solid sci-fi action with ingenuity. Looking forward to seeing where Anwyn goes next!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2024Good characters as Anwyn is finishing her academy training her life takes an unexpected turn. She will still be serving her world but in a different and unwelcome role. However with the assist from friends and family she finds this role isn't as bad as she thought. I will watch for her next adventure
- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2025Anwyn has graduated from her schooling, and wants to go to flight school. But her uncle has her go with him on a diplomatic mission. What follows helps her uncle, but also confirms in Anwyn’s mind that she definitely wants to go to flight school.

3.0 out of 5 stars 5 if it had been labelled for very young adult
Not much to ad, nothing wrong if your have the mindset of a pre teen. Sometimes l as a very mature adult enjoy books for that age group, this however did not to my taste afford sufficient depth to the charactes, and thus reader engagement. Shame really as the author managed to construct an intricate, almost believable, world, and packed the story with action.
