    Introduction

    The poems in this collection are about my experience of life with Long Covid. If just one of them comforts or entertains someone else grappling with chronic illness – whether that’s Long Covid, Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS), or any other condition – then my decision to share them with the world will have been a good one.

    Having Long Covid deconstructs you. To recover, almost everything you take for granted about your life probably has to change: diet, exercise, work, relationships, the way you breathe, and, above all, how you think. You must rebuild yourself into someone new. This is interesting, but hard.

    I don’t think any lesser experience could have prompted me to start writing poetry. It’s not something I’d done before 2022, with the exception of school English lessons and a workshop once at the University of Kent. In the depths of illness, though – as many before me have discovered – there seemed no other adequate form of expression. It’s also a
