Perfect Little Dolls: A totally gripping and fast-paced crime thriller (Detective Eleanor Raven Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 1,353 ratings

The little boy played with his toy trains in the bedroom, keeping quiet so as not to wake his mother. He stayed silent as he watched his window creaking open and heard the whisper from outside. A minute later, Tommy and the trains were gone.

Tommy Banks is a beautiful boy, everybody says so. With his ash-blond hair and large blue eyes, he’s the light of his mother’s life. He hasn’t seen his father since he was a baby, but that doesn’t matter now, because he’s getting a new dad. He’s been picked to be part of a special new family that he’s promised to keep secret. They’ll be together forever…

When Tommy goes missing from his home while his mother Rosheen is sleeping, she is beside herself with worry and guilt. And as the hours and days pass, it becomes clear that Tommy isn’t the only one who’s been taken. When the police link the kidnapping to another case, where a woman’s body had been lovingly preserved like a perfect doll bride, Rosheen feels sick with fear. She has to believe that Tommy is still alive. But will she find him in time?

A totally gripping, fast-paced thriller that will leave your jaw on the floor. The next rollercoaster read for fans of Lisa Gardener, Rachel Abbott and Cara Hunter.

Perfect Little Dolls was previously published as The Vault.

An excellent follow-up to the Safe Word. We once again follow detective Eleanor Raven as she hunts down a serial killer, all while we learn aspects of her backstory left unrevealed in the Safe Word. The serial killer in this story was quite intriguing and the ending to the book was very fulfilling. The author truly has a keen sense of pacing, story and a recognizable voice. I look forward to the third book in the Eleanor Raven series and hope it continues for a long time.

This was an intense read as Eleanor pursues yet another psychopath. The plot is exciting wraps the reader in the search for the killer and justice. The problem I have is the damaged DI Eleanor. It is hard to accept such a mentally and physically damaged police official being kept, even marginally, a part of the police department. It is hard to comprehend a police official dependent on sexual fetishes to be able to go on. The reader feels sorry for Eleanor, but it is hard to want to see her as a top police official. She needs to be redeemed through therapy or something.

I love discovering new crime series especially when they feature strong female detectives so I was really pleased to be invited to take part in Karen Long's blog tour for her latest book The Vault. A big thank you to Lou at Crime Book Club for inviting me to be part of this tour.

In The Vault we join DI Eleanor Raven a few months after her very narrow escape from death in the first book in the series The Safe Word. Eleanor has spent the last 6 months recuperating after her run in with a mad man and this book starts with her returning to work & landing a particularly disturbing homicide case on her first day back. Whilst disturbing the case initially looks to be a fairly straight forward murder with a woman's body being found at the local landfill site after a fire. That is until more bodies are uncovered on the site and the most worrying thing is that all of the bodies looked to have been preserved in some way. It would appear that once again a serial killer is on the loose in Toronto and it is up to DI Raven & her team to catch them. This time it looks very much as though the killer is murdering women in order to add them to his collection hence he earns the name The Collector.

I fell in love with Eleanor Raven in the first book, she's somewhat cold, strong willed with a darkness about her and it was really great watching her character develop in this book. There is a real intensity about her and she finds it very hard to trust and let people in - we much more vulnerability about her in this book as she battles with the emotional & physical scars from the attack that nearly killed her in book 1. She is still struggling to find common ground and make things work with her new partner Detective Whitefoot, the tension between the two of them is fantastic not helped by the fact that Eleanor wrongly accused Whitefoot of something at the end of The Safe Word. I am really looking forward to seeing what happens between these two characters. Is she able to let him in enough to be friends or is it actually going to go even further? Karen Long has written DI Raven so well and I can't think of any characters quite like her, she clearly has issues and is emotionally flawed yet is still a fantastic detective.

The other great thing about this series is the cast of wonderful secondary characters. Detective Whitefoot obviously has a past that we don't fully know about yet & it will be interesting to see what made him change his career path from being a Dr so drastically. Then we have Eleanor's old partner who is back at work but on restricted duties due to his ill health, he is the one person that calls Eleanor, Ellie which proves that she does let people in eventually. Her boss is a great character, a typical chief but DI Raven seems to know just how to wrap him round her finger. She also has a really good relationship with the other officers on her team and it is clear that she is very well respected by them.

As much as I enjoyed The Safe Word this book is so much better. Long has really developed both the main & secondary characters & this book has a much tighter plot that moves it along at a quicker pace. I love the darkness that Karen Long brings to these books, they really add a little something different to other crime fiction novels and the Toronto location is a great setting. The Vault can definitely be read as a stand alone novel but to truly appreciate the characters and Long's writing I recommend starting at the beginning with The Safe Word.

I highly recommend both The Vault & the DI Raven series to all crime fiction lovers who don't mind a bit of darkness in what they read. The Vault is pretty hard hitting & at times had me squirming so not an easy read by any means but a totally addictive one. Karen Long writes a really gritty story and tackles some real seedy issues head on. This series has so much potential and I'll now be eagerly awaiting the third instalment. What are you waiting for, go

I have been waiting for this book to come out for, it seems like, forever! I already have the third installment in the series, but didn't want to "cheat" by reading it first.
I really like Eleanor Raven and her team, they stop at nothing to solve the case! This tale came at a perfect time for me, as it consumed my mind, allowing me to try to ignore the chronic pain that I have suffered for years.
I'm so looking forward to reading book three!!!

When an oddly preserved body is found in Toronto’s biggest waste dump, DI Eleanor Raven is the one who catches the case. Nothing adds up from the beginning, and soon Eleanor has more than one body to deal with, as the killer starts trying to cover their tracks… while looking for his next victim.

Eleanor has her own demons to battle, apparently left over from the case she had to solve in the first book in the series. I hadn’t read it, but didn’t feel too lost; there was enough detail for me to understand what was going on - and very nearly enough to tempt me to go straight out and buy book 1, which I might have done if my TBR list wasn’t taller than my leg at the moment.

There’s some very interesting themes explored in the book. One of the victims is a (partially transitioned) trans woman, whose gender identity is treated with respect throughout, thankfully, and she isn’t the only trans character so it’s not a ‘bury your gays’ situation - just a sad reflection of the dangerous realities faced by too many trans women in society. Eleanor herself is an unpartnered (bisexual) sexual submissive who indulges in some potentially risky behaviour in order to find the release she needs, and she also has very obvious PTSD. Her counselling sessions are described on-page, something that doesn’t happen often enough, particularly in crime thriller series such as this where the protagonists suffer major psychological and sometimes physical trauma. The twist is a little different too, and while we know who the killer is from early on as we get scenes from his point of view, it’s fascinating to delve deeper into his mind and discover just how twisted he is as the story progresses.

I don’t know enough about tissue preservation to know, but it certainly read as authentic and like the author has really done their research into how a sick individual with the right skillset might go about fulfilling a genuinely horrifying fantasy. I was riveted, staying up late to finish the story, and therefore I can’t possibly give it less than five stars.

    The Vault

Karen Long is back, along with Eleanor Raven and the rest of her team as another serial killer stalks the streets of Toronto. Sometimes an author's follow up book shows how confident they are in their writing, and it shows here. I found The Vault EVEN BETTER than The Safe Word.

Again, the story isn't too dissimilar. A serial killer is on the loose and Eleanor is on the case. However, this time, with the after effects of the first book, she faces more of struggle not just to deal with the list of missing people, but also her inner demons as well. Long expands upon the character, and in my opinion, makes her infinitely more likeable. (I still have a soft spot for Whitefoot though!)

The killer this time is one of the most intriguing I have read of but I don't want to spoil it at all. Just do yourself a favour and pick up this book to experience one of the most unsettling killers I have read in a long time! Top stuff!

I cannot recommend this highly enough. If you really want to test your brain with a well thought out, compelling read, then Karen Long and her Eleanor Raven series are the place to start!

Ok so how long will I have to wait for the next one? Intelligent writing and good story. I would like Raven to be less tortured in the next one. In my opinion the books need to be read in order so start with The safe word. Well worth reading and if I could give it four and a half stars I would
