      Introduction

      Ilove games. Board games, card games, video games... I enjoy them all.

      But there are times when you find yourself stuck somewhere without any games. No cards. No dice. Not even a coin to flip.

      That’s where this book comes in. As long as you have a pencil and paper, you can play any of the 17 games included here. (To be more precise, some of the games require multiple pencils and multiple pieces of paper.)

      The best-known pencil-and-paper game is probably Tic Tac Toe. Draw four lines, and you have a game board. Xs and Os serve as game pieces. The first player to get three in a row wins.

      The games in this book – all of which are in the public domain, although I’ve rewritten the rules, sometimes extensively (and hopefully in a way that’s both clear and consistent) – go well beyond Tic Tac Toe. You'll find laugh-out-loud party games like Celebrities, deep strategy games like Gomoku, challenging word games like Ghost, and even the wonderful deduction game Bulls & Cows.

      So grab a pencil and a piece of paper. It's time to play!

      Bulls & Cows

      Bulls & Cows, a code -breaking deduction game, was almost certainly the inspiration for the board game Mastermind, designed by Mordecai Meirowitz and first published by Parker Brothers in the early 1970s. While Mastermind is played with six colors, Bulls & Cows is played with ten digits.

      Players

      2 players.

      Equipment

      A pencil and a piece of paper for each player.

      Goal

      To be the first player to decode their opponent’s secret number.

      Setup

      Each player writes a four-digit number on a piece of paper, taking care to ensure that the other player doesn’t see the number. The digits must all be different. Example: 4729 is legal, but 4724 is not.

      Choose a player to go first.

      Gameplay

      In turn, players try to guess their opponent’s secret number by announcing four digits. Like the secret numbers themselves, all guesses must include four different digits.

      The player whose number is being guessed responds by announcing the number of bulls and cows. A digit which is in the secret number and is guessed in the correct position is a bull. A digit which is in the secret number but is not guessed in the correct position is a cow.

      Example: Angie’s secret number is 8045. Bill guesses 0865. There is one bull (5) and two cows (0 and 8). Angie says, One bull and two cows. She doesn’t reveal anything else.

      Winning

      The winner is the first player to decode their opponent’s secret number.
