Chapter 1
Cairo
Ignoring Luna’s need to speak to the Angel scum, I focus on the latter point of her statement. What does have words with my birth father
mean? I direct the question to my Dragon, who gives me a knowing look. Are Luna and her father feuding? When did that happen?
Now, more than ever, I need to know what conversation took place between her brother and mother.
Luna, I think you need to…
I turn in her direction and realize she’s no longer standing next to me. She’s next to the Witch in charge of monitoring the portal, looking like herself—her disguise over and done with.
The Witch blinks several times, as if she’s clearing fog from her mind. She takes a step back and gives Luna a once-over before her eyes enlarge. She now knows that my Luna is Queen Lillian’s daughter. Anyone who’s seen the queen could put two and two together.
You need to close this portal.
Luna's whispers find their way to my sensitive ears. My Dragon blinks at the declaration, as do I.
Luna… Luna,
I say as I move in her direction.
She notices me approaching and steps closer to the Witch, closing the distance between them. She cuffs both hands around her mouth and leans toward the Witch’s ear, lowering her voice so low that I can’t hear it.
Luna, a word, if you please—
I reach for her, but she places the Witch in front of her. Smart girl.
My Excellency, is what,
she pauses, her attention moving from me to Luna before swallowing, Queen Lillian’s daughter saying about the ghost—
A few of the Supernaturals, less than a dozen, still waiting in line, begin whispering.
Queen Lillian has only sons.
No, Queen Lillian had a bastard daughter.
Does King Alastair know?
That’s probably why he banished her from the Necromancer Kingdom!
What do they mean, banished from the Necromancer Kingdom?
Luna asks, having heard them as she steps from behind the Witch. Her chest visibly rises and falls, and her attention is on me.
Luna, let’s talk about this privately.
I reach for her again, but she leans back.
Answer the question.
She puts her hands on her hips, waiting for an answer.
The Witch cuts in, saying, Well, it happened years…
She trails off when notices my expression.
Luna, I implore you; please, let’s talk about this privately.
Her face scrunches up as her posture looks as if she’s going to take another step back. Before she has time to escape me, yet again, I close the distance between us and pick her up. When we’re out of earshot from everyone by the portal, who are still looking at us, by the way, I set her down.
I can’t believe this.
She throws her hands in the air. She goes on and on and about not killing him, knowing he wants to kill me and bathe in my blood—
My Dragon has been lazily lounging about, but his head shoots up at this startling information
What?
I question.
Talking about he’s her soul tie… soulio, soul something—
"Did you say he wants to kill you and bathe in your blood?" I ask, just to confirm I heard her correctly.
Luna continues ignoring me, instead frantically pacing. If he really is her freaking soulmate, why did he banish her from their community? Who does that?
She finally turns to me. Is that what this soulmate stuff is about? You overlook everything bad about the person. You ignore the kids you had, just because of a fucking word.
She sighs in frustration, looking up at the sky. I grab her hands, interlocking our fingers.
It’s much more than a word, my Luna.
I swallow, fearful of how she will receive what I’m going to say next. Nor do I think anyone, Supernatural or Human, could truly articulate what it means to have a special half, a person meant only for them.
She remains silent, still gazing up.
I…
A brilliant example suddenly appears in my mind. You’ve accepted that I’m your mate, and you're still here because of the dreams you’ve had of us. The way I make you feel in your dreams forces you to abandon reason and take a chance with me. Just dreams, Luna. I haven’t proved myself worthy of those feelings yet.
She looks at me as tears stream down her face. They shouldn’t have reproduced.
I chuckle at that statement. And pass up an opportunity to have a mini version of the one person you love the most? I don’t know many couples who would say no to that.
Tell me, Cairo, is our fate eventually tiring of each other? You banish me because our love is too much or we put each other before the very children we laid down and made?
I open my mouth but close it. How do you respond to questions like that? Lie and live with that nagging at your very soul for the rest of your lives together… be truthful and add to the twisted portrait she has of mates.
I can promise you this: I will do everything in my power to remember this promise and not banish you.
I unlock our right hands and wipe her tears. Although if I tried to banish you, I do not think you’d go quietly.
I wouldn't,
she replies with a sad smile and cocks her head. And our kids?
Joy fills me, knowing she wants to have children with me. We will do whatever you see best for the kids.
She pauses, her eyes squinting before she nods, happy with my choice of words. Now, care to explain your father wanting to murder you and bathe in your blood?
Yes… that's why she sent me to the Human world. Long story short, my birth mother says there’s a prophecy. I’ll be more powerful than my birth father. Him, being the tool he sounds like, doesn’t like that; so to remain this badass, he wants to kill me and bathe in my blood.
And knowing that, you want to see him.
Yep.
She unlocks our left hands and takes a step back. There’s a theme I'm noticing with her. When she does something she knows I won’t like, she tries to put space between us. My Dragon chuckles at the observation. It’s a bit jarring because she somehow stays out of my clutches.
I draw a line in the air. Absolutely not.
Well, we have to go anyway to confirm he has a ghost army.
"We do not. I gesture between us.
You can and will rest at the castle."
You know,
hands on her hips again, in both my dreams and in real life, you are extremely bossy. I’m a tad disappointed, that’s true.
I take a step and grab her again. She giggles. Slipping an arm around her waist, I position her back against my front.
I’m not bossy, I—
Want to make sure I’m well and protected at all costs, and sometimes that means telling me no,
she says, verbatim what I was about to say. I guess she’s heard me say it a thousand times in her dreams. She looks up at me with a smug expression.
Brat!
I exclaim and pat her thigh. She winks at that. Also, my Luna, you can not release information so freely without confirmation. You telling her to close the portal was not the correct thing to do.
Ghosts taking over the world may not seem like a bad thing, but really…
She groans. I need to see you to speak to you.
Tightening my arm across her stomach, I smirk and lean down as she continues trying to look up at me.
"Do you or will
