It seems an almost impossible task for writers not born and reared in Ireland to realistically convey the Irish idiom of the English language, but Cindy Thomson has been more successful than most.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2008Cindy did a wonderful job at bringing you right into the story and into the characters lives. It's a well written book enriched with historical details that make you feel like you are right there seeing, smelling and feeling everything she writes about.
I was a little bummed with the ending though. The ending that Cindy gave is very sweet but I'd have liked her to go into more detail with the characters you grew to love or hate thru out the story... tie up the loose ends. Specially with Ardan. But over all I really liked this book and would read it again. 2 thumbs up from me!
I think a sequel is a must... Cindy, are you up for it?:)

by Cindy Thomson
In 5th-century pagan-dominated Ireland, Brigid is born a slave to her own father and is separated from her mother. Desperately seeking love and acceptance, Brigid becomes a believer in Christ. Knowing how the Irish people cling to superstitions and fears, can Brigid overcome them? Will her hatred for her father and a scheming evil sorcerer destroy her faith? Set in the era of St. Patrick, this fantasy-filled novel will captivate readers as Brigid must choose between God’s will and the desire to save her family.
My Review: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
by Tamera Lynn Kraft
I admit I knew nothing about the legend of Saint Brigid of Ireland, so all of this was new to me. I found the story Cindy Thomson weaved about Brigid to be fascinating. In this novel, Brigid was a real girl with longings and temptations just as every other girl has had. She wasn't some larger than life saint. She was ordinary. What made her extraordinary was that she surrendered her life to God and prayed every time she or someone else needed help. Because of this devotion to God, God used Brigid mightily perform many miracles through her, most to feed those who were hungry and destitute but some for protection. Brigid, in some ways, reminded me of George Mueller who prayed every time he needed food to feed the orphans he was caring for.
Another thing I loved about this novel was the sense of Irish folklore and the element of danger throughout the story. I couldn't put it down because I need to find out what happened next. I recommend this novel.
I was given a free copy of Brigid of Ireland but was not required to give a favorable review.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2010This book is easy to read and I could not put it down. Brigid of Ireland gives you more detailed information on Saint Bridgid that I could not locate elswhere. I also got a great perspective on the ancient history of Ireland and a good picture of how people lived at that period of time. The author must have done a lot of hard to find research to put this well written book together.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2020I never knew at the beginning it was about a real person until the end. I didn't know anything about Irish people until they came to America. Can't wait to read the other book by the same author that I have.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2017I have since read more recent releases from the author Cindy Thomson, and love her newer novels and highly recommend them. I am delighted to come back and add Brigid of Ireland to my Kindle shelf to read again. I am writing this review and rating on my purchase of the 2008 paperback Brigid of Ireland: A Historical Novel
As a historical novel this was good for bringing in the terms and talk of the Irish, but as a novel it was not quite my cup of tea. Somewhere toward the last third of the book several years were jumped and there was no clue to the time passing that rapidly before. It was rather choppy to me. One day she was a young girl doing what she felt the Lord wished and missing her mother... while the next she was a selfish woman who didn't understand what she wanted. Things just did not really seem to flow and make sense to me. I do not however regret reading it, I do feel that it was enjoyable, minus the choppiness. The ending however abrupt was really good and appropriate.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 4, 2011I absolutely LOVED this book and the wonderful story of St. Brigid! I could not put this book down! I have been researching different saints and because I have Irish heritage, I started reading about St. Brigid. I saw this book and read the reviews and decided to get it. Best decision! You won't be disappointed getting this book. Arrived exactly on time too! Definitely a must read!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2019I have heard or read individual stories of Brigid but I was delighted with the way this novel integrates them so well into a full account of her life. Good read

5.0 out of 5 stars Brigid of Ireland
Brigid of Ireland is the story of St Brigid, an early missionary and mystic in pre-Christian Ireland. 'The Mary of the Gael' as she is sometimes known, Brigid was the foundress of the Abbey of Kildare.
Slave to a cruel master who is also her natural father, Brigid coverts to Christianity after hearing the teaching of St Patrick. She embarks on her mission to spread the word of the gospel in Ireland.
As an author, Cindy Thomson is particularly strong on characterisation. Brigid is a very human saint, devoted to her mother and a lover of animals. She is kind and gentle, but brave and feisty too - a truly engaging heroine. Brigid's arch-enemy, the druid Ardan, is also a fully rounded character, not just a stock villain.
Sadly, I don't think Brigid of Ireland is likely to have a very wide appeal. Those interested in hagiography will wish to take a look. But afficionados of general historical fiction and/or Irish history must be warned that the historical background of Brigid's story - the conversion of Ireland to Christianity - is not dealt with in depth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent read
A wonderful novel but I do wish it didn't have the obligatory blonde on the cover with long hair gently blowing in the wind! I find it irritates me before I've even opened the book!
Nevertheless a really good read.
