      Through the porthole of the HunterShip, or HS as The Hunters—New Earth’s most elite task force—referred to it as, the curvature of humanity’s home planet glistened like the distant stars had receded into the background to allow the most hope-filled sphere in the galaxy to present its glow. The black canvas of space was beautiful to Commander Khaled Malik, who had seen his fair share of sights over the years.

      But the view of home, combined with the relief of returning to the planet he’d grown up on and loved—that was a feeling no other place in the galaxy, or indeed outside it, could replicate. None at all.

      How long until we return? Khaled asked Janny, the main pilot in the ship’s cockpit in charge of the flight crew.

      ETA in about thirty minutes, Janny said, checking her flight desk. It should be a smooth landing, sir.

      I should hope so, Khaled said, mentally reviewing the events of the last few days. Whilst home brought with it nostalgic feelings of nature and the sun and freshly cut grass outside his house, Khaled brought news of a catastrophe about to strike. A catastrophe that could wipe out the human race entirely.

      He smelt the scent of something foul, in addition to the smell of antiseptic, throughout the cockpit. That scent was the danger of the war they were about to face. A war that could end everything he knew and loved.

      He walked out of the cockpit to the sea of soldiers milling about on the social floor. Though none spoke with the jubilant tones they’d held when setting out on their last mission. The war, now, was supposed to be over, with parties and celebrations occurring amongst the crew and those back on New Earth.

      In fact, Khaled was supposed to have sent the news back home of success over radio transmission, sparking glee and a ceremony awaiting their arrival. But he hadn’t—such news didn’t exist.

      Instead, the soldiers held gazes of a thousand yards, their stares were grave, their voices lowered like an attack was imminent, and the sentiment was as if the crew was lost in the expanse of space with no way home. Dreading the moment they would have to return to their loved ones and deliver the news—the war wasn’t over. A new phase had just begun.

      And the humans—they were already on the losing side.

      Khaled swept through the downtrodden soldiers murmuring under their breaths to the opposite side of the main floor, shoved himself across the metal flooring that clacked with every step until he reached the boardroom. On the boardroom’s central table was a link device—capable of capturing and transmitting holographic images.

      Khaled took a seat in a leather chair, mind whirring with thoughts—what to say to the higher ups in the chain of commandment, what to do as his first move in the new war, what to do with the Konx prisoner—Vindi—they had captured whilst conducting the mission.

      He clicked on the link device and brought up that image of the blue floating ball that had hidden within the Konx ship. Some strange combination of great energy and power that far eclipsed the plasma of the humans. In addition to that, the Konx had developed a slimy, silvery substance that countered humanity’s plasma perfectly, disabling it entirely to give the Konx the upper hand in every battle scenario.
