THE LIGHTS IN THE hotel lobby started to flicker.
Elizabeth sat up straighter, instantly on guard. She looked around.
Damn it! None of the other guests waiting for the shuttle to the Portland airport appeared to notice how the lights flashed off and on. They didn’t hear the loud buzzing noise either, sounding like the approach of an angry swarm of bees.
The steak salad that Elizabeth had had for lunch with her clients suddenly felt like a leaden weight in her stomach.
She pushed herself up to standing, intending to leave. Now.
She could take a taxi to the airport, though she didn’t want to spend the money. She grabbed her purse, her laptop bag, and her matching yellow suitcase, then headed for the revolving door.
Too late.
The air grew viscous, as if suddenly filled with honey. Elizabeth fought against it, but it had already caught her.
Everyone in the hotel lobby slowed down as well: the couple hurrying to the reception desk came to a halt, the concierge pointing out the door now stood motionless, the uncontrolled child who’d tripped had stopped, mid-fall.
Helpless, Elizabeth stood without moving like everyone else. But she was the only one aware of this break in normal time.
