    Prologue

The old sailor sat alone by the fire, the flickering flames casting shadows across his weathered face. Outside, the wind howled over the cliffs, rattling the wooden shutters of the small cottage. The sea was restless tonight, waves crashing against the jagged rocks below, as if whispering secrets only he could hear.

He pulled his coat tighter around him and reached for the battered leather journal on the table. The pages were yellowed, the ink faded in places where salt and time had worn them down. He had written every word himself, long ago, before he had learned the truth.

    Before he had been trapped.

He turned to a familiar passage, one he had read over and over again:

The island wasn’t lost. It was hidden.

His fingers brushed the rough edges of the page. He had spent years trying to understand why, trying to uncover the truth buried beneath the waves and stone. But the island was not meant to be found, not by ordinary sailors, not by those who stumbled upon it by accident.

It chose who could see it. When it would reveal itself.

And now, as he stared into the fire, he felt it again, that pull, that undeniable feeling deep in his bones. The island wasn’t done. Someone else would come.

    Someone had to.

With a sigh, he picked up his pen, dipped it into the inkwell, and began to write once more.

If you find this, know that I tried to warn them. Know that some secrets are buried for a reason.

Outside, the wind howled louder, carrying the scent of salt and rain.

And far beyond the horizon, hidden in the shifting mist, the island waited.

    Chapter 1

    A Summer by the Sea

Jack pressed his forehead against the car window, watching as the narrow coastal road wound between cliffs and sparkling blue water. The sea stretched out endlessly, the sunlight dancing on its surface. It was nothing like the city back home. The air smelled of salt and wildflowers, and he could already hear the distant cries of gulls.

Beside him, Rosie fidgeted in her seat, twisting a strand of her curly red hair. How much longer? she asked for the tenth time.

Not long, their dad replied from the driver’s seat. Just past the next bend.

    Jack sighed.
