British-born A. L. Butcher is an avid reader and creator of worlds, a poet, and a dreamer, a lover of science, natural history, history, and monkeys. Her prose has been described as ‘dark and gritty’ and her poetry as ‘evocative’. She writes with a sure and sometimes erotic sensibility of things that might have been, never were, but could be.

She also has several short stories in the fantasy, fantasy romance genres with occasional forays into gothic style horror, including the Legacy of the Mask series. The Shining Citadel is the second book in The Light Beyond the Storm Chronicles. This book centers around the search for a lost city that can help the elves rise from their current sorry state, and gives the backstory on how they fell from their former glory. Archos and Dii are back, along with Olek and Ozena, and are joined by Th'alia, a captive elf who is being forced to lead them into a trap so that the Witch Hunters can claim the riches of the lost Citadel for themselves and get rid of the Archmage Archos, along with Marden, Th'alia's Witch Hunter escort and Talfor, a troll.

As in the first book, the characters are strong, unique, and engaging. It was fun to catch up with Archos, the thoroughly awesome mage, and to see how Dii and the other characters from book 1 are doing. Marden's character arc was especially interesting, as the Witch Hunter comes face to face with the fact that everything he's been taught about elves and mages is a lie. The group - Archos, Dii, Olek, Ozena, Th'alia, Marden, and Talfor - meet up with exciting and dangerous adventures during their search for the Shining Citadel. And the trolls in this world are really cool.

Some long, tangled, run-on sentences make the book a little difficult to read in places, and, as in book 1, there are some very explicit sex scenes. However, readers who prefer to avoid reading explicit material can skim over or skip those scenes without the story being affected.

On the whole, The Shining Citadel is an exciting, heroic fantasy adventure with great characters that kept me reading, wanting to know what happens to the characters and to learn more about this fascinating world.

Alex surpassed the excellence of her book one with this one. We catch up with our two mages, thief/assassin/ and archer, aka Archos, Dii, Olek and Ozena. Toss in a soldier, Marden, an elf scholar, Th'alia, and our handsome troll, Talfor and you have the adventuring crew for this book. Dii continues to grow as a character, gaining more self confidence. We get to witness the adorably cute and deadly duo, (whom I gift with the combined name of Ozek) Olek and Ozena. Marden is Th'alia's witch hunter guard as the group searches for something that could bring about another war if they find. We also ,eet the race of trolls that Archos has connections with as Talfor is their guide through the mountains.
This book has all the suspense of the first if not more. We find out a tad more about the plague that has devastated mankind and elves. Truths are exposed and the lies are sifted out like chaff on the wind. The characters are exactly what they should be...we see compassion from the ones that have spent their lives in slavery, we see treasonous thoughts as Marden finds truths, we see beauty in a race that has always been deemed ugly as Talfor, the hirik Troll,
I loved how Talfor was the voice of reason in one pivotal spot. Archos, for all we love him, is human, is subject to the human emotions. Talfor was just an amazing character and he quite stole the book away from Marden and Th'alia, in my opinion, but I am okay with that. Each character has their strength and their weakness and as a group, they are complete. The plot moves at a really decent clip, excellently executed! Alex has taken her time and created a world, strife with politics, fear and greed; filled it with characters that want to make a difference and change things.
Anything I didn't like??? hmm...I read fast, there was a few times the rich descriptions almost got in the way of the story, but I would rather have that than minimal descriptions that leave me wondering if I am seeing things the way the author wants me to see it.. Highly recommend this ...and yeah, if you haven't read the first, there is enough for you to go on to get the gist.....Now for the third one....come on Alex...write faster~

The saga of Erana continues in this enchanting book. The author has created a dark world that soars with striking detail. The reader is drawn quickly into the tale of the sisters and the moral question as to what would you do to save the life of someone you love? Would you betray even yourself?

As part of the Erana series this book stands alone as a solid read and also is an excellent part of the whole that carries the story forward. The exciting final battle brings some success and leaves, of course, more unanswered questions. It leaves the reader wanting more.

Fans of Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings will love this book. This Erana series cries out to be made into a television series.

If I have one problem, it is with the extreme detail of the 'bad guys' doing evil to the good but when the good take down the baddies - it is brief and unfulfilling. To put up with Hendrick being the biggest scum bag I have seen in a long time was bothersome. To have this piece of trash snuffed out without at least a paragraph of him suffering and seeing how much it hurt him and how destroyed he felt was needed.
