Author

Fannie Price

In her childhood, Fannie developed a love of writing and creature features. By the mid-90s, she discovered urban fantasy, and it quickly became her favorite genre to read. After noticing the lack of diversity in the female heroines of the genre she’d grown to adore, Fannie decided to use her writing skills to amplify the voices of Black female protagonists and other underrepresented people in the genre she loves.  She enjoys mixing elements of magic and mystery, with health doses of darkness, and a touch of romance into familiar cities, transforming them into a part of the supernatural realm. Her attention to detail and talent for crafting complex and flawed individuals adds depth and authenticity to her stories.  An avid Witcher and Assassin’s Creed fan girl, when she’s not writing, she spends her free time with family, going to the movies, watching football, and Investigation Discovery. Way too much Investigation Discovery.

    The Pines - Fannie Price

    I

What makes the sword so special?

I follow my question with a side-eye glance towards the passenger seat Lachlan occupies. Driving along I-95, the scent of brine, seaweed, and shellfish reaches my nose, even though I can’t see the Atlantic. According to Lachlan, my senses will even out to a permanently on status once my body adapts to the new physiology that comes with being a mated dragon rider. Until then, they flicker on and off in their best rendition of a flashlight in a horror movie.

Komen constructed the handle from my scales and infused it with your blood.

    Ew.

From the corner of my eye, I see Lachlan turn to look at me. I beg your pardon?

    His indignation makes me grin.

My blood, not your scales, I clarify. You know I love all your dragon parts.

In the silence that follows, I know Lachlan rolls his eyes. Or as close to a male born in the UK can come to rolling his eyes.

"So, I hold out my hand and say, Sword, like Paige in Charmed, and it’ll appear?"

Lachlan catches my right hand when I fling it out. After he places a kiss on the meaty part of my thumb, he interlaces our fingers and rests our hands on his thigh.

You’re a dragon rider, not a White Lighter. And while it is magic, it’s more involved than just saying the name of the object. You must call to the blood in the handle while you envision the sword.

I nod and listen without my usual commentary.

    It is also one-directional.

I can’t send it back to where it was? I ask.

Can you send your skin or hair away? he challenges.

During our conversation, I’ve lost track of the distance to the exit for Turtle Bay, Delaware. When the sign appears abruptly during the road curving to the left, I make an immediate adjustment to take the ramp on the right. Lachlan releases
