      There was no anger nor frustration in those words, despite the frequent repetition over the last half decade. Yet they still hit Chloe Reed like a particle projector cannon to the chest. The twisting sprouted in her gut and thrust out until fingernails dug into her palms as Major Jeffers turned and walked away. The pride of his footfalls wasn’t narcissistic, as found all too often among MechWarriors in any command: the jagged, twisted sense of worth that always led to waste and needless deaths. Instead, it was the sure understanding and pride of knowing you were the epitome of military life.       She closed her bright green eyes, head bowed as her shoulder-length, dark-brown hair fell across her face, her already thin lips stretched into a grimace. Sucked in a lungful of humid air as the region surrounding the city of Hirihito moved into its rainy season. And tried to settle the hunger that seemed to burn ever brighter, despite any other accolades that moved her from a lonely repair shack to ruling the tech roost among the Blackhearts.

      Thoughts of the holovid message sitting on her noteputer flittered through her pain. The specifics of the contract were generous. But did she really want to be that person?
