The twisting sprouted in her gut and thrust out until fingernails dug into her palms as Major Jeffers turned and walked away. The pride of his footfalls wasn’t narcissistic, as found all too often among MechWarriors in any command: the jagged, twisted sense of worth that always led to waste and needless deaths.
