Curtis Poole stood with his hand pressing against the open doorway of his daughter’s apartment. She never invited him to visit when she was alive. He did not want to be here now that she was gone.
Lynn’s hand, cool and small, pressed gently on the small of his back. We have to do this.
The heat of the living room seemed to push heavily against Curtis’s chest, forbidding him to enter. The drapes were pulled back from the picture window on the far wall, and the afternoon sun had turned the room into a greenhouse. The sofa, with thick arms, upholstered in a heavy, blue-gray fabric, took up most of the wall to the left.
Above the sofa hung the Marty Stanley painting of the sun setting beyond Mount Diablo in the distance, displaying
