About this ebook
Contrary to popular belief, love is not blind.
Love sees with eyes and ears wide open, absorbing everything it encounters as it exerts its subtle influence on our physical, mental, and spiritual health. If positive relationships with ourselves and with others can lead to spiritual growth, will the lack of love then lead to spiritual decay?
In this collection of 175 poems, Yasmin Jasmy explores the dynamics of love and not-love and the way our bodies have been calling us to pay attention to the status of our hearts. In an effort to encourage self-awareness and radical self-love, Yasmin invites you to pause and ask your heart: Is there love here?

Love is the will to extend [oneself] for the purpose of nurturing one’s own or another’s spiritual growth.
A definition Bell Hooks borrowed from M. Scott Peck’s book The Road Less Travelled. Lying on the grass, reading these words for the first time, I cried. The words ‘spiritual growth’ felt right in my heart.
Upon reading that definition so many questions burst out in my mind. What if we experience spiritual decay, then? Is that an absence of love? Are we aware of the actions that cause spiritual decay in our relationships to ourselves and others? For the purposes of this book, I call the actions or inactions that give rise to pain and suffering not-love
.
Interestingly, people with a history of abuse or neglect are more likely to suffer from depression, substance abuse, and other behavioural issues than those who do not.¹, ² This aligns with the idea that not-love leads to forms of spiritual decay. We also cannot ignore how our physical health is influenced by our spiritual health, as is seen in heart patients.³
Our intelligent bodies have been signalling, calling us to pay attention to the status of the heart – is it benefitting or suffering from the quality of our closest relationships and regular interactions? Unfortunately for us and contrary to dominant belief, love is not blind – it sees with eyes and ears wide open, absorbing everything it encounters. Thus, it is time to take stock of our experience and ask ourselves: Is there love here?

I organised this book into two parts: Not-love & Love. Not-love deals with what hurts a heart and Love with what pleases it.
This is how
it’ll make sense to the mind,
but the way it’ll make sense to the heart
is by reading between the
lines.
