Preface
Right now I am at home, as most of the nation is and many other nations around the globe are. I am lucky that I am a writer and I can occupy myself with that, whereas usually I fit my square-eyed scribbling around working with clients. Like many people I feel a need to offer what support I can, even if that is just a little. So I have written this brief guide in the hope that it may help some people struggling with stronger-than-usual emotions of fear, anxiety, stress, worry and other feelings resulting from loss of control or a sense of powerlessness.
In times of uncertainty and upheaval we can face a mixture of strong and sometimes unfamiliar emotions. This can be especially tricky if we have never been taught how to work through these feelings in a conscious way and we can feel overwhelmed as if by formidable and invisible forces.
I want to teach you some simple tools to use so that even in the hardest times you can regain your footing and act effectively and authentically. Many people are saying that the way we act now will be remembered for years to come, will be a reflection of our character and integrity.
As I sit here the sun beams down on the garden outside releasing the lively smells of spring and as always it brings back strong memories of childhood. When the classroom windows were opened for the first time that year and the lazy hum of lawn mowers carried my mind away from the teacher’s voice as if it was floating on the warm spring breeze. It all seems so at odds with the seriousness of current events.
But that is life; good and bad, easy and hard. And when it is really hard the good is even better, that is our compensation. So I suggest trying to work through the difficult emotions when they come up and enjoy the good ones while they last, acting within our integrity and looking forward to a future that is easier because of our newfound strength.
Introduction
This is a very short book. I wanted to get the essentials down so that people can start using the exercises and benefitting from them, so unlike my other (longer) books it is not meticulously researched and does not cover lots of theory. Instead I have focused on giving you the most effective tools that I have seen work with my clients.
When we feel stressed, anxious or fearful it can be hard to take in a lot of information. In this state it is easier to take in small parcels of information, so this guide is broken up into bite-sized chunks.
I have also used quite simple language to keep it easy to
