      Chapter 1

      Rhiann Kelly-Butler sipped from the steaming cup of coffee cradled between her hands. Standing near the large picture window of the log house that faced southwest, she inhaled the scent of pine as the aroma trickled through the new home. She gazed outside as fingerlings of rose, cornflower, peach, and saffron filtered through the December dawn sky and caressed the eastern hills with light. Diamonds of snow danced on the ground, and the mountains to the west stretched their rocky peaks toward the morning light like a ballerina elongates her arms to the rhythm of music.

      Rhiann sighed. She never tired of early mornings at the Montana ranch. The dawning light bathed her in tranquility. No finer way to begin a day.

      She felt a light scratching upon her left leg. She looked down and smiled. She placed her coffee mug on the nearby burnt wood lampstand and bent down to pick up Jax. The black and white shih tzu wiggled with joy and gifted a soft lick to her chin.

      This is our special time, isn’t it, sweet boy? Rhiann whispered. She cradled him in her left arm and picked up her coffee cup once again, relishing the aroma of peppermint creamer. Jax snuggled his recently-clipped face into her neck as Rhiann propped herself against the windowsill to again take in the view.

      Two horses, one black and white paint, the other a palomino, stood in the nearby corral west of the house. Down the drive, dawn began to envelope the newly-constructed Paradise Valley Canine House, which secured the rescue dogs under her care. The dimly lit manager’s home to the left of the dome-shaped sanctuary house told Rhiann Miriam and her daughter Naomi were awake and about to embark on the drive to the bus stop. She smiled at the memory of the seven-year-old’s excitement last night announcing her upcoming Christmas break, just a few days away.

      Rhiann heard the door connecting the mudroom to the outside slam. Located off the kitchen, the space kept boots, winter coats and hats, skis and snowshoes, and other miscellaneous objects needed to operate a horse ranch and animal sanctuary. She watched her husband Levi emerge from the room, minus his winter apparel. He gave her a big grin.

      At your favorite morning spot, I see.

      She returned his smile. You know me well.

      He strode his six-foot-frame to her, ruffled Jax’s head, and then wrapped his arms around Rhiann’s waist.

      We picked a good location, didn’t we?

      Only because you were willing to give up some pasture, she replied.

      He turned her around to look out the window once again. It was worth it to have this view, Levi whispered. We’ll create more pasture next year. We have what we need for the horses we’ve got now.

      With his arms still around her, he added, Get ready – here it comes.

      They watched the sun break the horizon in full force. Levi kissed Rhiann’s hair.

      I must admit, the extra red in your hair brings out more of the holiday spirit, he said.

      Rhiann laughed. I was only trying to hide some more of that gray that’s crept in. Fire-red was not the planned result.

      Levi laughed and kissed her hair again. I like it – suits your personality some days.

      She turned to look at him. Oh really?

      Like now, he said with a grin. Even your eyes are blazing.

      As they stood together in silence, the orange sun kissed the western mountains, igniting the ranch and valley with rays of light.

      I never tire of seeing this, Rhiann whispered.

      Me either, even if the temperature drops a few degrees for the next while, Levi remarked, his voice also low.

      What’s it now?

      When I was feeding the horses, it was fifteen-above. The high today is only going to be about twenty-five, tomorrow closer to freezing – definitely a better day to travel to Livingston and the park.

      Rhiann nodded. I’m glad Mrs. Stanfield was willing to wait an extra day; it will be a better travel day not only for us, but for the Westie she’s adopting.

      I’d still put a sweater on the little guy. We know from experience with our own small dogs, isn’t that right, Jax?

      Rhiann smiled as Levi ruffled the shih tzu’s head again. She loved how the former puppy mill dog took so quickly to Levi after they had started dating and then later married. She and Jax shared a few years together before Levi came into their lives.

      She looked out the window again as she heard a vehicle rev up, and she watched as Miriam loaded her young daughter into the Suburban parked near the manager’s house. A moment after the woman jumped into the driver’s seat, the SUV ambled down the long gravel drive toward the highway.

      Off to school young Naomi goes, Levi remarked.

      She sure is excited for Christmas break.

      Well, wouldn’t you be if it was your first Christmas at the ranch?

      I had a first Christmas here a few years ago, if you remember.

      I do. And it was pretty special.

      She turned in his arms and looked into his eyes. We were planning our wedding.

      He smiled and kissed her lips with tenderness. And the building of this house.

      After he stepped away from her, Levi asked, So what’s on your agenda today?

      I’m meeting Miriam at ten to go through the finances again from the fundraiser. I want to see how much we may have to put toward the Kitty Condo expansion. We still have some expenses from the completion of the Canine House. Our year-end campaign will be for Kitty Condo, but Miriam and I need to see just how much we need to raise.

      That was a great event the two of you put together, he said as he walked toward the kitchen and the coffee pot on the nearest counter.

      Don’t forget Desi’s help. That girl is a firecracker!

      As he poured a cup of coffee, Levi shot a grin and said, Maybe she should dye her hair red, too. You two would be unstoppable.

      Ha, ha.

      Rhiann heard her cell phone ring. She placed Jax on the hearth rug and picked up her phone from the end table near the couch. She noted Miriam’s number.

      Good morning, Miriam. Did Naomi miss the bus?

      Her friend’s words caused her to look at Levi. He caught her eyes on him and returned her gaze.

      We’ll be right there!

      As she hung up, Levi asked, What happened?

      Miriam and Naomi found a Corgi and a cat in the snow by the mailbox. She has them in the Suburban, but they are nearly frozen.

      Let’s go!

      Rhiann set her coffee mug on the end table and followed her husband’s long strides to the mudroom.

      What are a dog and cat doing out in these freezing temperatures?

      Her brain and stomach twisted as she pulled snow boots onto her stockinged feet and slipped into a wool coat.

      Chapter 2

      Levi clicked off his phone and walked toward the large wire enclosure set up in the living room of the sanctuary manager’s house. Rhiann sat in the middle of space next to an overstuffed pet bed. Blankets covered the Corgi and cat the couple and their sanctuary manager, Miriam, rescued from the snowbank at the end of the driveway. He listened as Rhiann cooed and soothed the shivering animals. Her love for creatures, especially the lost, abandoned, and neglected ones, never ceased to amaze him.

      Trisha will be here in twenty minutes, Levi said as he observed his wife.

      She looked up at him. Hard telling how long these poor things have been roaming about. I can feel the Corgi’s ribs, and though the cat doesn’t seem too malnourished, she’s not in the best of shape either.

      Miriam walked in from the kitchen, carrying a bowl of warm chicken broth and rice.

      Well, they will find great care and good food here, the thirty-something woman said.

      She handed the bowl to Rhiann, who accepted it and then placed the round dish next to her on the floor. The gold and white Corgi raised his head and sniffed.

      Does that smell good? Rhiann asked the long-muzzled animal.

      She set the dish closer. The dog lapped a bit and began to earnestly eat. After a moment, Rhiann moved the dish from the dog’s reach.

      Not too much now, she said in a low voice. We don’t want you to get sick.

      She moved the container near the gray cat. How about you? Want to try some? The medium-haired feline barely moved her head. Well, maybe later. Let’s get you warmed up more first, Rhiann said in a soft voice.

      I’ll leave you two ladies to tend to these critters and I’ll go out and take care of the other sanctuary animals.

      Oh, Levi, I’ll go do that – it’s part of my job, Miriam said. I just wanted to help get these guys settled ...
