Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

Craig is a million-selling author of science fiction (post-apocalyptic, military sci-fi, and space opera), thrillers, and non-fiction.

Craig retired from the Marine Corps after a long career in the military intelligence community, having worked with most of the U.S. Government's three-letter agencies. After a short stint with physical security, Craig went to law school, graduated summa cum laude, and went into business consulting. From intelligence, to the inner workings of company board rooms, to on-the-ground leadership, Craig has seen it firsthand.

His books are an extension of his experience, putting the trials and tribulations of a fast-paced world into your hands. Whether in Science Fiction, Thrillers, Fantasy, or even his Non-Fiction, you'll find consistent themes of justice and doing right by those who are counting on their leaders. Leadership is a service, not a crown to lord over others.

No matter where Craig went, he always had a book with him. Thanks to 21st Century technology, He now has thousands of books at his fingertips and with him wherever he goes. How many books would he have read on deployments had he not had to carry a physical book?

No one is encumbered like that now. Craig loves the works of Robert Heinlein, Anne McCaffrey, Andre Norton, JRR Tolkien, Robert E. Howard, and so many more. He has been compared to Andre Norton and that is humbling - she was an incredible author with a huge list of novels to her credit. With every new book, Craig aspires to live up to those that you, the readers, have compared him to.

Through a bizarre series of events, Craig ended up in Fairbanks, Alaska. He never expected to retire to a place where golf courses are only open for four months out of the year. But that's the way it is. It is off the beaten path. He and his wife get to watch the northern lights from their driveway. Their dog has lots of room to run, just until temperatures reach fifty below zero. They have from three and a half hours of daylight in the winter to twenty-four hours in the summer.

It’s all part of the give and take of life. If they didn’t have those extremes, then everyone would live in the sub-arctic.

I’m usually a tough reviewer. This exceeded my expectations. Excellent Plots. Excellent Characters. And Excellent Scene Settings, not too flowery; but just enough to be descriptive and keep the stories flowing. I highly recommend this full series.

    What I liked :
Mostly self contained chapters so I wasn't left with cliffhangers and there wasn't a chapter I couldn't read through on a break at work.

There was some solid humor in this book and I love the banter between Braden and G-War

A creative look at discrimination using intelligent creatures.

    What I didn't care for :

This part is just personal preference but I really didn't care for the underlying theme at all. The way it was simply to be accepted that Braden's way is the only right way and everyone who thinks differently is wrong. And although Braden just hates killing people who disagree with his version of how the world is supposed to work...well...he just keeps doing it.

There is another sub plot that comes to light later on that I won't comment on as it would be considered quite the spoiler but I liked it even less than Braden's totalitarian approach.

    What annoyed me :

The editing was HORRIBLE. It got better in the last three books but still had lots of issues. I can sympathize with the struggles of an independent writer trying to find a good editor. The rule of services applies here - Good, fast, cheap; pick any TWO. However, there were so many errors that, for me, it greatly distracted from the enjoyment of reading.

I was lucky enough to have grabbed the omnibus but I can tell you that it would have turned me off to reading the series if I had been reading them as they were being written and at the end of each book the author writes in that they are holding the next book hostage until they receive at least 10 online reviews. That got old even when I knew I had the whole, completed series in my hand.

Overall, I enjoyed the read. I won't judge a book poorly based on subject matter. It's my choice whether or not to read subject matter with which I disagree. The lack of a 5th star is solely due to the editing. Aside from that, the main characters were developed well enough to be enjoyed and the story itself was compelling enough to keep me going through the things that annoyed me.

*As a side note...it's slightly disturbing that this kind of plot came from the mind of a soldier. Hopefully this isn't how those who serve and protect think the world needs to be run. Minority report was NOT an instruction manual for the future.

I don't think I've read any of Craig's books and decided I would give them a try. The Kindle Omnibus special was too hard to turn up, but even then I was worried I wouldn't like a story featuring a CAT as a main character. Well I WAS WRONG!!! I just finished book 1; The Free Trader of Warrens Deep and loved it. It was a very enjoyable read and I've started book 2 right away. The characters were believable, and got fleshed out as the story went along without a lot of soup-opera dialogue. The story provides a great backdrop you could use playing Gamma World or Metamorphosis Alpha (have you read those books yet, especially RED ANDROID). Anyway the story is fun so far, easy to read, yet gives you a meaty story. ENJOY

I had read several of these books in the past, but they were still being written and the remainder of the series was not available. What I had read was excellent. Now that I had the series books one through nine, I started against at the beginning. For the past week or so have thoroughly enjoyed following the chronicles of the Free Trader of Cygnus 7, or Vii as it is known on planet. The story progresses with almost a .ever ending series o adventures, discovery, and action. Book nine seems to become redundant early on, but it soon becomes apparent that the plot actually changes and is a natural part of the adventure. I believe every science fiction reader will enjoy and love reading this exciting series of books, and ok strongly recommend that they get this set.

The stories are a bit repetitive, but new characters are introduced, some leave, but mostly the motley crew increase little by little. I enjoyed the stories and the gallery plus the decisions being justified by the actions of the others.

The character development is a little simple, so the plot can be a bit predictable at times. This is the type of juvenile novel I enjoyed in early school. Overall, it's a fun read.

A very nice set of stories that maintained my interest. Until I realized this was intended as a YA series I thought the human interactions were somewhat simplified. The stories are very engaging and the characters follow a consistent path throughout the series. I very much enjoyed the rebuilding of a civilization that is the overarching theme of the series. I would advise reading the books with some breaks as it is too long to take in in one straight run.

5.0 out of 5 stars A YA series that is a so well written and developed that it's a great read for everyone
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 12, 2020
I am in my middle 60's, have been an avid reader of sci fi (and a bit of fantasy) for more than half a decade.

This is intended to be a Young Adult book rather than Early Teen. The quality of writing, story arc, character development and world development make it a great example of YA, but actually it is also much more. I suspect that not realising the intended audience has lead some reviewers to criticise the series for not being 'adult' enough. having said that, many of 'older/oldies readers could benefit from a gentle, well reasoned and argued reminder of what constitutes good communal, respectful behaviour!

Each book develops logically and naturally from the one before. The quality they have in common is that the heroes (of all gender and species) are faced with a task that has a strong moral side. Each story develops the overreaching story arc but introducing new (intelligent) species of animals, AI and androids. The intelligent animals (the - amusingly snarky - 'cats being at the pinnacle) are the result of genetic manipulation of a series of species to create help for the for the human colonists that fought a war that almost destroyed the paradise that the colony could have been. All of the animal kingdoms appears as the series develops. Each problem to be overcome becomes more challenging in terms of its moral issues and physical difficulty.

The characters grow and mature steadily (including Holly the AI) as they face up to and deal with each problem. The series has a proper ending as well!! The author had a story to tell and a point to make and having achieved both moved on ... so many authors drag a series out to continue to maintain an income - leading to the problem of same old same old storylines repeated in an ever more mechanical way. I respect Craig all the more because the follow on series exists in the story universe, but being set a century or more in the future and having a different context (space exploration rather than social recovery) allows readers to choose whether to dip into the next phase rather than feeling they are being enticed into more of the same to continue within the first tranche of adventures.

For YA readers, the way the moral/ethical conundrums are introduced and dealt with and developed as the overall story arc progresses is handled very well - not shouty/preachy, but with enough ambiguity for the main target age group to be able to hook onto and explore the issues with the characters.

Craig Martelle is an excellent writer, with a great imagination and well honed writing tradecraft.

The many nonhuman characters make these stories delightfully different.
Braden, the main protagonist, is endearing and often the butt of the humorous parts mostly from his telepathic cat.

    Worthwhile
The story has a bit of everything for everyone.
From '' Battle star Galactica to the Isle of Dr. Moreau ''
Not LOTR by any means other than length, it does provide many enjoyable hours of escapism.
