For My Cousins
A shout-out to all my cousins, but in particular to Gill and Maria, who got me through a very difficult time when I was very sick in hospital. I love you all, like cousins :)

Chapter 1
Teleporter Malfunction
You ready?
Savanna asked.
Jeb nodded his head slowly.
Savanna’s eyes sparkled as she ran her finger down the screen of the teleporter and the machine whirred to life.
Mission rainbow gem, part seven, find the pink gem,
the machine said in its robotic voice.
The world map on the screen showed a red tick across New Zealand, an orange tick over Japan, a yellow tick on top of France, a green tick on Singapore, a blue tick across Great Britain and a big purple tick over China. Jeb swallowed down his uneasy feeling and smiled at the thought of a new adventure to add to their impressive list. These school holidays were turning out to be the best.
Ever.
The screen blurred suddenly; pixels scrambled into an unrecognisable image. Then it went black.
Re-Calibration required. Unable to locate pink gem. If location is known, enter manually now.
Jeb and Savanna looked at one another. Their concern was reflected like a mirror. Never had their facial features looked so similar. They gulped.
Re-Calibration required. Unable to locate pink gem. If location is known, enter manually now.
The machine repeated.
Uh oh. What should we do?
they asked at the same time.
I don’t know!
they answered in unison.
How will we find the gem if the teleporter doesn’t know where it is?
Savanna sprang from her seat.
I had a bad feeling about the pink gem. It’s The Thorn’s fault, isn’t it?
Jeb stood up. The teleporter seemed suddenly small. Beads of sweat formed on Jeb’s forehead. Yesterday, when we got back, it made a funny noise.
Did it? Why didn’t you say something, Jeb? This is just awful. What are we going to do? We’re running out of time. Dad needs us.
Don’t panic Sav, we’ll think of something. We just need a little moment to think. Let’s get out of this machine, it’s stifling in here.
You’re right.
Savanna did not look convinced.
Jeb opened the door and stepped out of the teleporter. Savanna followed behind. Jeb took in a big gulp of air. That’s better.
He wiped the sweat from his forehead with the back of his hand. I can breathe out here.
Savanna forced a smile. She waited for Jeb to go ahead of her on the stairs, then switched off the basement light. She followed Jeb up the stairs into the shed.
Without speaking and with shoulders slumped, the twins closed the trapdoor and rolled the rug back over it. Savanna collapsed into her mother’s chair. Jeb leaned against the desk and tapped two fingers on his temple. Then he stood up straight. Where could it be?
How are we meant to know?
Savanna queried. We’ve never had any indication of where we are travelling to until we get into the teleporter. Why should it be any different this time?
I don’t know.
Jeb dusted off the old globe that sat on the right end of his mum’s desk. This is so annoying. Right when we’re so close to completing the rainbow gem.
He turned the globe with his right pointer finger. Here’s a thought. Maybe the past locations can tell us something. If we plot them on this globe, maybe there’ll be a pattern or some kind of clue.
Savanna looked across at the globe. It’s worth a shot, I guess.
She twiddled her thumbs thoughtfully. "New Zealand, Aotearoa. It starts with A. Maybe there’s an alphabetical element to this. Then J, for Japan. Oh, but we just went to
