About this ebook

Rescuing her cat from a tree was only the beginning.

When a dog chased her precious Princess Sookie up a tree, Mirra Walsh had no idea her cat's rescuer would be her high school crush, Quin Lawson. Hoping he didn't recognize her, she refused to tell him about herself, afraid he'd remember their disastrous meeting at the senior prom.

Rescuing her cat was the least he could do seeing as it was his police dog partner that chased the cat up the tree. One look into Mirra's eyes had him struggling to remember why they looked so familiar.

When a drug dealer sets his sights on Mirra, Quin and his canine partner must rescue the damsel in distress in order claim her for their own.

Quin to the Rescue - L.A. Remenicky

    Chapter One

Mirra stood and turned to peer out the family room window. She smiled as she watched the waves on the lake sparkling in the late afternoon sun. Finally, she’d accomplished her dream of living on Elmwood Lake. As a kid growing up in the neighboring town of Woodview, she’d dreamt of living in a pretty little cottage on the lake, and now here she was.

Princess Sookie wove between her legs and purred, obviously happy to be out of the cat carrier. Mirra bent down and picked up her pet, snuggling her beneath her chin as she walked toward the kitchen. Are you hungry, sweets? How about some dinner?

Princess Sookie sat and watched as Mirra opened a can of food and scooped it into her crown-shaped dish.

Here you go, she said absently as she put the bowl onto Sookie’s feeding mat, her attention on the hammering coming from the house next door. Bringing her attention back to her beloved pet, she stooped to stroke her head as she ate. I’ll brush you after you’re done. The cat looked up as she chomped on a mouthful of food.

A crash from outside had Mirra running for the door. Standing on the porch, she peered over at the neighboring house. She didn’t hear any screams so hopefully nobody was hurt.

Dammit, Rufus, a voice said as a dog started howling. Give me a sec, would ya, you mangy mutt.

A large dog ran out the door and howled again, stopping to look at his master as if checking to see if his howling had the desired effect.

A leash in his hand, a man stepped out onto the front porch. Now, come on, Rufus, you know you have to be on your—

He was interrupted as the dog, who she assumed was Rufus, caught sight of Princess Sookie who was peering out the front door and took off running straight for her while barking loudly. Princess Sookie took off out the door and scurried up the large oak tree in Mirra’s front yard.

She stood and stared at the dog as he circled the tree, periodically trying to heave himself up after the cat.

Bad dog! she yelled as she hurried toward the tree.

Rufus! Here! the voice from the house next door yelled, coming nearer.

She stepped closer to the tree and peered up through the branches until she caught sight of her cat. Princess Sookie, it’s okay. I won’t let the mean dog get you. Please come down.

Hey, I’m sorry. Rufus isn’t usually so rambunctious, but he was cooped up all day…

She turned and looked straight into a pair of hazel eyes that somehow looked familiar. Returning her attention back to her beloved cat, she said, My poor Princess, she’s not used to being outside. How am I going to get her down?

I’ve got a ladder. Let me get this idiot back into the house.

Thank you… She paused, waiting for him to supply his name. He obviously didn’t recognize her.

Quinton Lawson, Johnson County PD at your service.

Isn’t it firemen who are supposed to get cats out of trees, not cops? she asked as she tried to keep her brain from freaking out and making her blurt out something stupid. Quin Lawson, the best (and in her opinion, the hottest) basketball player Johnson County High School had ever produced, was standing in her front yard.

Well, yeah. I can call them if you want.

She laughed. No, but I hope Johnson County’s finest is up to the task.

    Rufus barked.

Come on, buddy, you’re making me look bad, Quin admonished the dog. I don’t know what got into him today. He’s my K-9 partner and contrary to how he’s acting, he gave the dog a frustrated frown, he is well trained. Come on, Rufus, time to show the pretty lady how well behaved you can be.

She blushed as the dog sat and raised a paw.

As she reached down to take the proffered paw, Quin asked, And you are?

She blinked at him. Quin wanted to know her name. Come on, Mirra, get with the program.

Oh, sorry. She held out her hand. I’m Mirra. Mirra Walsh.

Mirra Walsh? Why does that name sound familiar? he muttered to himself.

Horrified, she turned back to the tree and called to Princess Sookie again. No way was she going to remind him that she’d been the one who’d tripped on her dress and broken her ankle at the Senior Prom, landing in a heap at his feet.

After he’d taken the dog and closed him up in the house, he returned to stand at the base of the tree and stared up at the cat. He ran his hand through his hair and pulled his already askew tie down even further until he could pull it over his head. Stuffing the offending tie into his pocket, he turned and looked at her. I think my ladder will reach. Let me go get it, and we’ll get your Princess down, he said as he rolled up his shirt sleeves.

She stared at his forearms. What was it about a man’s forearms when he was in a dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up? The watch on his left wrist only intensified her obsession.

Thank you so much. I just moved in, so I don’t have any ladders or anything like that. It’s my first house. She gave herself a mental head slap. Quit prattling on about stuff he doesn’t care about.

With a grin, he headed for the garage attached to his house.

    Quin

He pulled the ladder off the hooks in the garage and maneuvered it out the door. Once he was out of the garage, he put it up on his shoulder and strode toward the oak tree in his oh-so-pretty next door neighbor’s front yard. He stopped and stared as Mirra peered up into the tree, trying to coax her scared cat down.

Mirra, a pretty name for a beautiful woman. Why did her name sound so familiar?

Here we go, he said as he set the ladder up against the tree trunk, extending it up until it was just below the cat. Can you hold the ladder steady?

Mirra put her hand tentatively on the ladder.

Like this, he said, and as he moved her hand with his, a zing of awareness shot from his hand to his groin. Both hands after I get on the ladder.

I can do that, she said as he put his foot on the first rung.

He moved his foot and stepped up, wishing he’d thought to change into his trainers.
