Chapter 1
First stop, Tokyo
Jeb looked at his twin sister, Savanna. You ready for another wild adventure?
he asked.
Savanna nodded her head enthusiastically. After finding the red gem in Aotearoa, New Zealand, I can’t wait to see where the teleporter takes us next!
Jeb’s eyes sparkled as he ran his finger down the screen of the teleporter, thinking of how lucky it was that they had discovered their mum’s secret basement workshop yesterday. No boring spring school holidays for us! While mum and dad were on work trips, they were making the most of exploring. The search for coloured gems to make a rainbow was lit!
The machine whirred to life, and the twins exchanged excited glances.
Mission rainbow gem, part two initiated. Find the orange gem,
the machine said in its robotic voice.
The world map on the screen zoomed in on Japan. Outlined in orange, the small island nation had a pin highlighting Tokyo.
Ooo, I’ve always wanted to go to Japan,
Jeb said, his excitement growing. I wonder where the gem will be this time. I’m tipping not in a glacial ice cave.
Savanna thought back to their first mission in Fox Glacier, Aotearoa, New Zealand, where they had successfully retrieved the red gem. Yeah. Hopefully, there’s another map. And some friends to help us if we get stuck, like those cheeky kea birds.
The teleporter made a clinking sound, reminding the twins to sit back in their seats.
Their hands gripped the cold metal tightly in anticipation of the spinning that would soon begin. They knew they had to be quick and clever to avoid raising suspicion from their mum’s aunt, Shirley, who was taking care of them for the start of the school holidays.
The chairs spun, and everything blurred for a minute or two. Jeb shut his eyes tight, willing the spinning to end. Savanna kept hers open until the whooshing wind of the chairs spinning at top speed forced them closed. When the chairs slowed to a stop, the electric blue portal swirled in front of them where the door used to be. Jeb and Savanna took a moment to catch their breath, their hearts racing from the exhilarating ride.
Jeb gulped. The earlier excitement turned to nervous butterflies bouncing in his belly.
Ready?
Savanna asked, picking up the backpack from the floor of the teleporter and standing next to the portal. She saw Jeb’s worried face. I’ve got butterflies too,
she said. She touched her stomach briefly. It’ll be alright though, just like yesterday.
Jeb ran his hand through his chestnut-brown hair. Then he nodded and stood. Ready,
he said.
The twins reached for one another’s hands and held tight.
Three,
they said together. Two.
They paused. Savanna gave Jeb’s hand a little squeeze. One.
The twins glanced reassuringly at one another. Go,
they shouted and jumped through the portal. Their skin buzzed and there was a loud zap in their ears. They landed on a metal surface in a dark corner. A soft breeze blew.
Phew. I’m glad that’s over,
Savanna said. That felt even stranger than last time.
She dropped Jeb’s hand and rubbed both arms until the tingling stopped. Her heart pounded with a mix of excitement and trepidation. I wonder how long the portal will be open this time,
she said, eyes momentarily mesmerised by its purplish-blue glow. I don’t want a repeat of last time with the bubblegum.
Me neither,
Jeb agreed. His heart pulsed in the side of his neck, and he breathed deeply. He caught a faint whiff of exhaust fumes mixed with the scent of rubber. That was so sticky and gross. Anyway, we better get moving. How will we find a small orange gem in one of the largest cities in the world?
I was just wondering the same thing,
Savanna said.
The twins emerged from the dark corner to find themselves on the rooftop of a skyscraper. The portal had opened in the curve of one leg of a gigantic sign that sat
