4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 35 ratings

Spunky, independent graphic designer Meg Malone finds herself pregnant soon after her no-good boyfriend abandons her for the professional poker circuit. Glad to be out of that mess, she swears off relationships. Then she meets Matt Thatcher, a solid, stable man, who throws her plans a curve.

Matt, an up-and-coming minor league catcher burned one too many times by women who see him as their ticket to the good life, carefully guards his heart against “baseball babes.” He’s drawn to Meg for many reasons, chief among them she has no clue what he does for a living.

Will it be game over when their secrets come to light? Or is their budding relationship strong enough to win the World Series of love?

"Beauty in the Ballpark" is the second novel in Artlene Hittle's "All Fair in Love and Baseball" series. Just like in "Diva in the Dugout", the Arizona Condors pro baseball team supplies another sexy hero for this lovely romance. This time Matt, the team's catcher, falls for Meg, a graphic designer for the advertising agency that represents the Condors. Both Matt and Meg need to overcome heartbreak - Matt at the hands of a cold-hearted "baseball babe" and Meg left alone and pregnant by her ex-boyfriend. Ms. Hittle once again shows us the sweet intricacies of love for two strong-minded people. Matt tries to restrain his take-charge attitude which scrapes against Meg's desire to have her wishes about how she takes care of herself respected by those around her. With compromise and respect both slide into home together.

This is the third book I read by Ms. Hittle and my favorite so far. The characters are likable I found myself rooting for them. The dialogue is smart and witty and really made me want to read more.

Book 2 in Ms. Hittle's Love and Baseball series is another major league hit. Of course, I'm partial to romance, and as the wife of a former high school baseball coach, I love the game of baseball. Though I wish there was more baseball in her novels, the novel stands alone as a wonderful story of two people who face some incredible odds, yet are solid enough to realize they belong together and can work through whatever curve-balls life throws at them.

I'm finding through Ms. Hittle's stories that I am very drawn to her male characters. They're sexy, strong, and ultimately do the right thing because beneath their tough exterior, they are harbor a good set of morals. And what can I say? There's just something about a man in a pair of baseball pants that is just plain sexy!

I'm anxiously waiting to read Sliding Into Home.
