Roped Into Trouble - Kristoffer Wolff

    CHAPTER 1

Although she couldn't have cared less about politics, Jade giggled at her companion's snide response to the governor's statement on the news playing overhead.

Likely it was the booze talking, as she had come to the local dive near her office to blow off some steam after an unusually slow week.  It wasn’t uncommon for a private investigator living hand-to-mouth, but her hand had been more empty than not as of late, and if she didn't get a decent-paying gig soon, she might lose her new assistant.

Three drinks ago, a tall, dark-haired man took the stool next to her and after a few minutes of disinterest, commented on her drink of choice— a double bourbon with a cola chaser.  Unlike the typical guy suffering from yellow fever, this one hadn't broached the subject of her ethnicity, nor did he seem like he was even attempting to pick her up.

It didn't hurt that he was pretty good-looking, either.  In fact, he reminded her of someone she couldn't quite place.

When Joey the bartender announced last-call, the liquid courage she'd been putting away for the last six hours caused her to blurt out, So, you going home to anyone?

    Not anymore, Rich replied.

    Oh? Jade asked.

Rich shook his head.  Long story, and I'm sure it’s one you've heard before, given your profession.

'Nuff said, Jade winked.  We've all made a few mistakes in our lives.  My apartment's halfway across town, but my office is right around the block.  I haven't got a bed, but the couch should be big enough for...

I think I get what you're saying, Rich smiled.  I probably wouldn't stick around until morning anyway.

Well, what are we still doing here? Jade asked as she dismounted her stool and almost fell over on the wet floor.

Rich reached out and steadied her.  You okay? he asked.

Yeah, just a bit dizzy from sucking down whiskey for the past few hours, and people have been messier than usual tonight, she answered.

Well, allow me to keep you upright, Rich offered.

Get me back to the office in one piece, and I'll keep you upright— if you know what I mean, she slurred.

Rich simply nodded and the two left the bar.

The cool night air cleared Jade's head a bit as the two made their way to her office.  Office was somewhat of a stretch, as it was merely a converted single-bedroom apartment that she'd remodeled into something resembling a place of business.  Initially, she wanted to use her own place, but the zoning in her neighborhood prevented her from running a business from there, and she wasn't going to give up a rent-controlled apartment in a decent area of town.

Jade fumbled with the lock on the security door and stumbled a few times going up the steps to the second floor.  Fortunately, Rich seemed like he was in better shape than her.  She just hoped she didn't pass out before they got into it.  As she opened her office door, she flipped on the lights.

This is it, she announced, waving her arm.  The apartment door opened into a living area where her assistant's desk sat, along with some chairs on the off-chance there was a wait.  The bedroom was her private office where she could talk with clients behind closed doors, and it contained a smaller desk, some filing cabinets, and the aforementioned couch.  The kitchen was tiny, but served as an all-purpose room with a coffee-maker and drinks in the fridge.

Not too shabby, Rich commented, nodding his head.

Jade planted a quick kiss on his lips.  Be right back, she said before darting to the restroom.  You can go into my office over there and make yourself comfortable.

Once she'd done her business, Jade straightened her hair and fixed her makeup.  It had been way too long since she’d gotten any action, so a one-night stand seemed the best way to re-energize herself in more ways than one.

God, I need this.  It's been way too long.
