About this ebook
**This is a SHORT 10K word story**
Canines are on the "catwalk" at this Laguna Beach dog fashion show—a heartworm awareness fundraiser—where former Texas beauty queens and currently-not-speaking-to-each-other cousins, Caro and Mel, are in attendance. When award-winning show beagle, Shadow's, owner drops dead from eating a deadly scallop ceviche, the cousins find themselves embroiled in much more than a fashion "faux paw."
Former Texas beauty queen cousins, Caro Lamont and Melinda Langston are at it again – attempting to solve murders that is. This time they're both in attendance at a Laguna Beach dog fashion show- a heartworm fundraiser when show beagle owner, Phil Tawney, drops dead and his dog, Shadow, goes missing.
Pet therapist, Caro, is on the lookout for the missing pup, and Bow Wow Boutique owner, Mel, is sniffing out the truth behind the rumored reality show, Behind the Curtain of Best in Show. While the cousins are doing their best to stay out of Detective Judd Malone's investigation, it's really no surprise they soon find themselves on the tail of the killer. Was it the fame-hungry soon-to-be ex-wife, the rabid Shadow fan, or the aspiring actor who served the deadly appetizer? Or did someone else have a hidden agenda?
Can Caro and Mel chase down the clues before someone gets away with murder?

CARO
Here we go again.
Not sure if I’d said the words aloud or not, I looked over at homicide detective Judd Malone who stood by my side.
I was impressed by how quickly he’d arrived. I was also beyond impressed at his restraint in not making the comment I knew he wanted to.
Our eyes met and I heard it in my head anyway, Caro Lamont, what is it with you and dead bodies?
You know him?
Malone nodded toward the victim who lay face down on the grass surrounded by crime scene techs.
Even though he’d used the present tense, the guy had already been pronounced dead fifteen minutes ago by a doctor who’d been in attendance at the Project Dogway event. Granted, Dr. Stolzman was a plastic surgeon, but the medical examiner had just officially confirmed what Stolzman had already told Howard Tuttle, our host. Apparent anaphylactic shock caused by ingesting a scallop. The poor man was allergic to shellfish.
Yes, he is – uh, was a client,
I answered Malone. Phil Tawney. I just started working with Shadow, his beagle, who has been having anxiety issues since Phil and his wife have been going through a divorce.
I’m afraid Shadow is going to be having some more issues,
Malone noted. Do you do grief therapy for dogs?
Malone never failed to get in a dig about my profession. You see, I’m a pet therapist. Because I started out as a people therapist, I knew most pet issues were people issues, and I knew Malone’s derision had more to do with him than with me, but still there were times, like now, when it stung a bit.
All of us with fur-kids know dogs do grieve. But I let the comment slide.
I wonder where Shadow has gotten to.
I glanced around the backyard at the collected guests, most of whom protectively clutched their pooches. I didn’t see the beagle.
Malone followed my perusal of the crowd. What the hell kind of event is this anyway?
It’s a dog fashion show,
I waved a hand toward the various dressed up canines and the runway that’d been set up in the spacious backyard of Howard Tuttle’s Laguna Beach mansion. A fashion show to raise awareness about heartworm.
Heartworm?
Yes.
I laid a hand on Malone’s leather-clad forearm before he could walk away. He stood out in his low-key black jeans, dark T-shirt, and black leather against the fancy red dresses, red jackets, or for the more subdued, red ties. Heartworm is a serious and potentially fatal disease but entirely preventable in dogs. If people would just...
Malone turned back to look at me.
Again, no words were needed to convey his thoughts.
Okay, I’m off my soapbox.
I released his arm. "The dog fashions are from my cousin, Mel’s, shop. Bow Wow Boutique is one of the co-sponsors of the fashion show."
And is Melinda here?
he asked.
I’m sure I don’t know.
"I’m sure
