Yorkshires wild moorland and rugged coastline provide a hauntingly beautiful backdrop for this 14th century medieval adventure trilogy, which follows orphan boy Oric's progress through adolescence to manhood.
Brought up and educated by elderly alchemist, Deveril, Oric's comfortable lifestyle comes to an abrupt and devastating end when a band of marauders sack his home. Returning to the manor after an early morning foraging errand, Oric finds the house on fire, the inhabitants dead, and his mentor mortally wounded. On his deathbed, the old man relinquishes a key warning Oric that a terrible disaster will surely occur, should it fall into wrong hands. Deveril also hints of great wealth, but he dies before he can impart any further information.
Characters both good and evil play a part in Oric's quest to discover his identity, and the deadly secret locked away by the alchemist's key. He is helped, but more often hindered, by an unruly wolfhound named Parzifal. Boy and dog experience many adventures, some hilarious, some life threatening, before a surprising, lifechanging conclusion is reached.
