Scars of Stone (Pacts Arcane and Otherwise Book 2) Kindle Edition
Discovering the truth about magic is one thing. Doing something about it will require bloodletting, backstabbing, and a bunch of lies.
The battle with a demonic foe had opened Kamira's and Veelk's eyes: they were unprepared for their task. If they want a chance of freeing Veranesh from his crystal prison, they need the help of a brilliant inventor imprisoned by Gildya, a man also desired by the refugee queen, Cahala, who will stop at nothing to slake her thirst for magic.
Time is also of the essence as Archmage Yoreus maneuvers for power. Once he claims the title of the first archmage for himself, he will tie up all loose ends, and that entails burying Kamira, Veelk, and a long line of secrets he’d prefer to be forgotten.
Kamira and Veelk have a rule, “no heroics, survival first.” When dealing with demons, avoiding heroics is easy. But survival? Not so much.
Join Kamira and Veelk in their adventures as they face Devanshari warriors, high mages, and demons!

About the author

Joanna might be a bit too cautious to do anything even remotely daring or dangerous herself, so she writes about daring adventures and dangerous magic instead. Yet, she found enough courage to abandon her life in Poland and move to Ireland, and then some years later, she abandoned her life in Ireland to move over to the US. She’s determined to settle there, once she finally chooses which state to reside in.
When she’s not writing or thinking about writing, she plays video games or makes amateur art. She lives the happy life of a recluse, surrounded by her husband, a stuffed red monkey, and a small collection of books she insisted on hauling across two continents.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nuanced and action-packed addition to an excellent sand and sorcery adventure...
Firstly, if you haven’t yet had the pleasure of reading By the Pact, then put this offering back on the shelf and grab a copy. Initially these two books were written as a single volume, so the opening action in Scars of Stone follows on immediately from the final scene in By the Pact. While I think most experienced readers would eventually pick up what is going on – it’s a shame to compromise such an entertaining read by initially floundering.
I have a real weakness for this Sand and Sorcery sub-genre, where demons or djinn frequently feature with some kind of magical possession in a desert world. Kamira and Veelk are interesting, nuanced protagonists who have their own edges as they have spent years working together and trying to survive against formidable odds. I also like the fact that their partnership isn’t a romantic one, despite the fact that they spend weeks and months relying on each other to the extent that they have saved each other’s lives on a number of occasions.
While there is a romantic thread running through the book, it’s not straightforward. Joanna has provided Kamira with a couple of prospective partners – but she is wary of committing to any kind of long-term anything. Which, given the huge task ahead of her, is a wise move. Right now, it’s debatable as to whether she’ll survive what lies ahead. I love the degree of plotting and politicking going on in amongst the action scenes, both by the demons and the high mages. There is also the complicating factor of the refugees, who are all getting steadily sicker as their addiction to magical essence starts to bite, while trying to resettle in a city where there is no magic freely available.
All in all, it provides plenty of tension and excitement that meant the pages flew by. Once again, this one ends on the cliff-hanger. So I’m very much looking forward to reading the third book, Shadows of Kaighal, which is hitting the shelves in March 2022. Highly recommended for fans of enjoyable fantasy adventures, where characters are nuanced and the stakes are high.

5.0 out of 5 stars Devoured this in days
Devoured this book in days and was gutted when it ended! Cannot wait for the third one to see how all these wonderfully crafted plotlines come together!

4.0 out of 5 stars A compelling and original story, but not without flaws.
Note: this is a review of books 1–3 of the series. At the time of writing, book 4 has not been published.
Raise your hand if you’ve ever read a fantasy book with one of the following:
+ An old band of mercenaries/heroes get back together to defeat an ancient evil/rescue somebody.
+ One street urchin or farmer boy is destined to defeat the Evil Empire.
+ Prophecy.
+ Mindless monsters have to be defeated by heroes.
+ Wise wizard teaches young man.
Chances are you raised your hand, because some clichés have become so prevalent in fantasy that you can tell the plot of a book without even reading it. Well, what attracted to me By the Pact is that it tells a refreshing story, with minimal clichés, and it subverts both the evil demon and the wise old wizard tropes. In this story, the wizards are cunning and duplicitous, without being cartoon villains. The demons, likewise, are constantly plotting against each other—and they bear humans no ill will, though they hold no special love for them, either.
What emerges is a fast-paced, compelling story that constantly keeps you on your toes. There is abundant mystery and intrigue; the author always retains the capacity to surprise you. And this, dear reader, is very important to me—because I have gotten bored of cookie clutter fantasy.
This is not to say that the books are flawless. In terms of characterisation, the main characters—Kamira, Veelk, Koshmarnyk and Veranesh—are interesting and generally likeable. The stoic and brave Kamira is easy to admire, while the enlightened intelligence of Veranesh is something I appreciate, even if he is a demon. The antagonists—Yoreus, Irtan, and the demons—are also well-drawn.
But while the main characters are strong, the secondary characters are quite weak. This is unfortunate, since the narrator spends a lot of time telling the story through the eyes of boring characters, which makes me impatient to read through their sections. Ryell started out with a lot of potential but didn’t really go anywhere. Jalyn’s life and death was pointless. (It’s not even a spoiler to tell you he dies, since he is so unimportant.) The Devanshari prince has tons of unexplored potential, but lacks agency.
The issues don’t stop there. The writing is… rough. The possessive pronomial adjectives, his/her, are often mixed up, leading to gender confusion. Generally speaking, the writing felt like it needed the attention of a good copy-editor.
In short: this would be a 5 star book if it had been properly edited, so I settled on 4 stars.
