Personal Electric Vehicles - IEVs: Select Your Electric Car, #5
()
About this ebook
So, you want to stay at the top of the curve on Electric Cars. Well, the trend is actually moving beyond cars. The trend is going in two directions - public transportation and personal electric vehicles - e-bikes, etc. Often these are combined with people riding their e-bike to the bus or train, then riding on public transportation, then finishing their ride on their e-bike. This book is about Personal Electric Vehicles.
Personal Electric Vehicles are all about you. They're what you would be if you were an Electric Vehicle. So, I call them IEV, with an emphasis on I, for short.
There are all sorts of IEVs - Cycles with one, two or three wheels and varying speeds; skateboard in various configurations including hoverboards, watercraft, and VTOL - vertical takeoff and landing. I also include micro cars, atvs, farm equipment, and warehouse vehicles.
I've included an evaluation cheat sheet to help you do research before you buy. I give you the specs on the top models in each category. And, I try not to make it too boring, though everyone's eyes will probably gloss over some of the numbers.
There's something in this book for everyone. Even me, who's afraid to ride on a motorcycle, especially one that goes over 200mph. I list my choices and the pros and cons of going this route. In the end, the decision will be yours. Will you jump on this edge of the Electric Vehicle curve or not? It will help save the Earth. And it might save your wallet.

About the Author
Who Makes What?
Introduction
I call Personal Electric Vehicles IEVs. That’s because people want their Electric Vehicle to be more personal. They want it to resonate with who they are (I). Can you blame them?
An IEV is like your alter ego. For some people, this would be a Tesla or a Nissan Leaf. But, IEVs are more personal. That means they’re typically smaller. Often they’re smaller or not much bigger than the driver / rider.
Ask yourself these questions. If I put wheels on my feet and added some batteries for electricity, what would I transform into? How fast would I be able to go? And, how much fun could I have getting there? That’s the IEV for you.
I originally called these vehicles EPTVs – Electric Personal Transportation Vehicles. However, some of them are not for Transportation. Also, it’s common to call Electric Vehicles, EVs. So, I thought that I should keep the E and the V together.
Next, I thought about calling them PEVs. But many people use BEVs for Battery (Operated) Electric Vehicles. BEV distinguishes Fully Electric Vehicles from PHEV – Plugin Hybrid Electric Vehicle. Also, some people use PEV for Plugin Electric Vehicles, which includes both BEVs and PHEVs.
I ended up calling Personal Electric Vehicles IEVs. IEV looks like 1EV, and that might also be an appropriate term. Not only are these EVs for a particular person, they are often for only 1 person.
I also considered using I=EV. The equal sign only worked visually, not when spoken. So, I ended up just using IEV.
In this book I cover:
Skateboard of all sorts
Cycles of all sorts
Mobility Vehicles
All-Terrain Vehicles
Snowmobiles
Warehouse Vehicles
Cars and Trucks
Amphibious Vehicles
Copters
and more
all of which are Personal Electric Vehicles. And one of them may just be your IEV.
The Transition to Electric Cars & Beyond
Hi, my name’s Dale Stubbart. And I’ve been covering Electric Cars for over 50 years. I’ve written several books on the Transition to Electric Vehicles.
Personal Electric Vehicles – IEVs is another book on that subject. This one takes us beyond Cars.
People are buying fewer Cars these days. There are also fewer people who are applying for Driver’s Licenses, according to an article I read recently. People, at least a few people, are trying to transition beyond Cars.
One way that people are transitioning away from Cars, is to use Public Transportation instead. For that, you can read my book, Riding the Bus 101 – 101 Things to Know About Riding the Bus.
Another way that I see people transitioning away from Cars, is towards Personal Electric Vehicles. In this case, they want something smaller, something which weaves in and out of traffic more easily. Often, they want something that they can just get on and go like a Skateboard or a Bicycle. They want something that’s easy to park. And perhaps, they want something that doesn’t cost so much. However, some IEVs are very expensive.
You can read more about my love for Electric Vehicles. See the About the Author chapter at the end of this book. There, you can learn about other books I’ve written about this transition.
What I’ll Be Covering
What is an IEV? You’ve probably already formed your own idea. Still, let me tell you my definition.
An IEV typically carries one or two people. That makes it personal.
An IEV is small. Well, at least, it’s small-ish. Just how big small is, is related to the type of vehicle. And, since some vehicles hold more than two people and are still small, I’ll be including them.
There are many different types of Personal Electric Vehicles which are available. And more are coming soon.
I’ve included a few which are still in the development stage. I’ve especially done that when there aren’t many IEVs available in that category.
I’ll include IEVs which are slated to be in production in a year, even though some of those will actually take several years to become available to the public. And there’s a chance that some of those IEVs will never be produced.
Some IEVs may not be available in your area. Kandi, for instance is available in Texas, but not in Hawaii. Perhaps I can have a Dealer ship one to Hawaii, if I decide to buy it.
Many Micro-Cars are not available in the US. Manufacturers seem to think that US Residents are only interested in Light-Duty Trucks and SUVs. They also seem to think that US Residents aren’t interested in Electric Vehicles.
I’m seeing a trend toward IEVs in the US. And, I’m not the only one. So, perhaps we’ll someday see more Micro-Cars here.
Some Low-Speed Vehicles can be shipped into the US. However, if they’re not registered as a Low-Speed Vehicle, you’ll have to do that yourself. That process includes getting a mechanic to perform any upgrades that are needed to get the vehicle certified and registered as a Low-Speed Vehicle.
In many cases, where there are a plethora of IEVs in a category, I’ll only be listing top models. Top models will include the most popular and those with the most range.
I’ll also include those which are the fastest. Fastest may not be safest. And the fastest speed may not be legal.
I’ll list prices even though affordability won’t factor into whether a vehicle makes the cut or not. Since these are personal devices, many will be affordable.
Of course affordable is a relative term. It depends on what you’re buying, what you think it should cost, and how rich you are.
I’ll be including vehicles which catch my eye. For me, these are top models. Usually what catches my eye is something different. This includes the Aptera – a mostly solar powered Car which looks like a jet. The side-by-side Electric Trike with two seats from Workman Cycles also caught my eye. I’ll list my choices at the end of this book.
As with my other books on Electric Vehicles, I am not including IEVs which partially run on fossil fuels. I am including hybrids which are powered only with electric and human power.
Personal Electric Vehicle Definition
What is a Personal Electric Vehicle (IEV)? How am I defining them?
#1 It’s Fully Electric: I won’t be including any Hybrid Vehicles which use fossil fuels.
#2 It’s
