Hammered (Legacy of Magic Book 1) Kindle Edition
Seattle native Matti Puletasi has the strength of a bear, the stamina of an ox, and a magical hammer inherited from her dwarven mother.
She’s happy renovating homes and occasionally thumping bad guys until she learns of a mysterious artifact hidden under the house she’s working on. Everybody from humans to orcs to werewolves wants it, and they’re willing to kill to get it. Things go from bad to worse when someone frames her for murder.
The only person interested in helping her is a haughty elf assassin from another realm. He’s handsome, powerful, and deadly, but he’s got an agenda of his own. She dare not trust him—or be attracted to him.
But if she can’t clear her name, the assassin will be the least of her worries.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2025Dammit. First I get pulled in through Star Kingdom. Then tried Death Before Dragons and got sucked into a whole new genre. Had to try Flash Gold too... that hooked me as well. Can't forget Rust & Relics either. Couldn't pass up a deal on this first book of Lindsay Burokers' new series, and I'm hooked again! Love the characters and character development! Action, sarcasm, fun, romance.... you did it again! Thank you! Based on this book, I expect to lose track of time frequently over the near future as I plow through the series. It's just difficult to set it down!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2024I’m really enjoying this new to me author’s writing style.
The character and world development are engaging and interesting.
There are quite a few chuckle moments and I love the interactions between characters that she creates.
No sex scenes in this one. I sense that It’s going to be a slow burn romance. Which I love.
This book had a few fight scenes that were a little much for me. Mostly because our heroine wields a giant hammer.
I don’t understand why descriptions of battles with swords, guns and any other weapon have zero effect on me. But I just fast forwarded a little. I learned something new about me.
I highly recommend this author and reading the previous series will help you with this one.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2025I really enjoyed learning about all the different characters in this story and their unique personalities, skills and backstory. The author creates a world of wonder and adventure. Can’t wait to read the next one in the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2023Hammered is the first book in the Legacy of Magic series and the first book by author Lindsay Buroker that I have read. Hammered is unlike any book I do believe that I have read before.
I love the world that has been created for the Legacy of Magic series. I fell in love with the characters from the first page. It reminded me so much of The Witcher: Blood Origin. I keep seeing Meldof from The Witcher: Blood Origin. It was the hammer of course and the dwarfism that did it.
Matti Puletasi inherited a hammer from her dwarven mother. Matti has more than one use for her hammer. Matti with the help of her friends flips houses for a living. Matti also uses her hammer in fights when she is being hunted and chased down by werewolves and other paranormal creatures.
Matti has a new house to renovate. This new house has a whole lot of problems headed her way. Matti learns that there is an ancient artifact hidden somewhere on the grounds of the house. Matti feels a pull to tear up the floor of the house even though there is no need to.
Now she has a whole bunch of paranormal creatures hot on her tail who want the artifact for themselves and will do whatever it takes to get their hands on it.
Hammered drew me into its world from the first page. Once I picked it up it was like magic pulling me deeper and deeper into its world. I could see and feel everything that was going on. I couldn’t turn those pages fast enough as I had to know what was happening. I felt a connection with this world and the characters. I can’t wait to read more from this world. I can’t wait to read the next book Betrayed.
As a matter of fact, I enjoyed reading Hammered so much that I highly recommend it to all paranormal fans! Grab your copy of Hammered today!

Good introduction to Matti's story with some familiar thrown in. It's been a while since I read Val's series and her adventures with Sindari and Zav as well as Willard which was good because it allowed me to be suspicious of them along with Matti who has no love for the military. She's a part dwarf house flipper whose father is in prison, captured by the military and whose mom is dead, all when Matti was 4. She's not permitted to visit her father per the military so she's unable to determine by the eyes of an adult if something else was going on at the time. I'm any case, Matti does have her dwarf mom's hammer which is not only magical in nature as Matti finds out, but indestructible, at least that she's been able to tell so far as she bashes enemies over the head regularly and also uses it in her demolition work. Matti purchased a home to renovate and encounters Sarrlevi, an elf assassin who's looking for Matti's mother and believes that she's alive. An arrogant elf assassin helping Matti so she can help him find her mom. The prior home owner was zealously guarding the home due to a tunnel dug deep and winding under the floor of the basement through the city. It was the hiding place for a magical cylinder with power allegedly equivalent to a nuclear reactor. Magical beings are therefore attracted to the fixer upper and Matti gets into several battles as she fights off the magical to keep them away from the home she's renovating. Along the way, Matti accepts a job offer as a contractor for the military, gets to battle with Val and Sarrlevi, adventures to a different realm via portal, valiantly leaps into trouble to save her friends, and starts unraveling some of the cookie crumbs that might lead her to her mother's last known whereabouts since Matti doesn't believe her mom is still alive but has some old pictures and a story that her mom was the first daughter and heir to the dwarf kingdom.
The book was a page turner and kept me interested throughout. I wished that the author took more time to delve into certain things as opposed to skimming the surface and moving on. The emotions were absent for me as well, I couldn't really get worked up about Matti or her friends, even as they all faced some kind of danger. I'm not sure if it just wasn't emphasized or if I missed it but outside of stacked and short, I'm not sure I know what Matti looks like. I was also unconvinced with the budding something-situationship that's going on with Matti and Sarrlevi, at least from this one but we'll see what comes in the next one.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2024Matti is a great main character and I love her series. The first book is really good, I got into it quickly and devoured all her books in a few days.
Good world building, interesting characters, well-paced plot.
There's another series set before this one (Death Before Dragons with Val), but I read this one first. Then I read Val's. I didn't feel like I missed anything and it was fun reading it that way for me. But if you want to do it chronologically, read Val's story first.

Entertaining novel, great story, cool protagonists, that one can relate to. All one looks for in suburban fantasy ☺️. Gonna read them all!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nailed it! (sorry :o/)
So pleased I decided to read this. Quirky, short title, intriguing cover picture. From start to finish I was entertained, and gripped. I instantly liked the main character, and the development of the others, was well timed. With the easy, flowing writing style, plentiful humour, wall-to-wall action and excellent plot building I could hardly stop reading. Thoroughly enjoyable & believable (for a fantasy story), can't wait to continue the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars SENSATIONAL
Oh Wow! This book was really thrilling.
I also loved the character of Matti, a worthy leading lady.
A real page turner, I couldn’t it down and cannot wait to start Book 2.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it!
This is a spinoff of the Death before Dragons series. I think you definitely should read the Death before Dragons series before this one. One, because it's an awesome series. Two, because at the start of this book there isn't any world building and I think you'd miss out on a lot in the story.
I love Matti! And I love that Val is still in it too because I thought we wouldn't see Val (and Zav) again.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great beginning to this urban fantasy series
I am really enjoying this series, urban fantasy is my favorite genres so great to find a new series i love! Also, great title! i like the characters in this book, Matti is a down to earth, funny heroine, the hammer is awesome!, and the supporting characters are a great bunch. Love the world building, it's always great when a new fantasy world catches your interest and you can't wait to read more books in the series to find out more about this world/Universe the author has created (my only disappointment is that dragons seem to be jerks in this universe, but i digress). Great story, can't wait to get to the 2nd book, so i have to stop writing this review so i can download it, later!
