Silken Ropes (Kink Awakenings Book 1) Kindle Edition

3.8 3.8 out of 5 stars 141 ratings

He never knew boundaries could be so sexy.

It took Ross Jensen ten months to lose 98 pounds, but the day he makes Lifetime in Weight Watchers he loses another 220 in an instant when his boyfriend dumps him. He'd never heard of a “chubby chaser,” but he’d been living with one for a year. Ross's BFF offers him her guest room and drags him out to her favorite sex club. He's hoping for a little action—or at least a distraction.

When Miles Shigihara is not busy designing meditation gardens, he practices Shibari. He's looking forward to a relaxing evening at his club, but is captivated by first-timer Ross. Miles doesn’t hesitate to approach Ross and treat him—and a small audience—to a steamy scene.

Irresistible chemistry and a shared love of ropes draws them together, but Ross will need to leave his body issues behind and get comfortable discussing his boundaries if he’s to have a future with the man who's managed to tie his heart in knots.

Warnings: This book features a corporate sensitivity trainer with an agenda who experiences sexual assault, an awesome gal-pal who helps him through it, a sexy Japanese rope artist, and the unconventional sex club of my dreams.

This book was previously published. Portions have been re-written for the Second Edition. An additional 8,000 words of Shibari and wedded bliss has been added to this Special Edition.

I liked this story. Ross meeting his goal weight and then his boyfriend dumping him because he wasn't attracted to him anymore was so realistic. That's what I felt about a lot of this book, any of this could happen. Ross moves in with his friend "Scarlett" who happens to belong to a BDSM club. Ross' first introduction to the club is a scene he participates in with shibari master Miles.

Ross has explosive reaction to shibari and Miles and he is interested in knowing Miles more.

Lots of stuff happens hit and miss between them.

I thought there's be more interaction between characters. There was a lot going on in both MCs lives.

I thought the book was good.

I loved the description of Ross as someone who had just lost a large amount of weight and was exploring life with a different sized body and all that implied. I was also intrigued by the use of shibari as a plot point and hoped that the author would be able to take me into that experience in a realistic way. The story was all I hoped for and more. The shirbari is described in beautiful detail so you can see and feel the experience completely and Ross and Miles are two absolutely amazing characters. This is a do not miss read.

This was my first Charley Descoteaux book. It was a good quick read, but I went in expecting much more kink. Miles and Ross are beautiful together and I wish that had jumped off the pages more.

I enjoyed reading Ross' story. After living with Brad for a 2.5 years , he dumped Ross because of the weight he lost. Apparently, Brad only wanted Ross because he was heavy. Ross' BFF was Janet and she talked him into moving in with her. She hated living alone anyway. After spending some time not doing anything. Janet decided that they needed to go out and have some fun. Janet took Ross to a private club owned by friends. Let's just say Ross was a little surprised, but this is where Ross meets Miles. A good read.

This was the unique book that was both confusing at times because of simultaneous story arcs and also lagging? It felt like a lot of the plot lines never got resolved.

I was pleasantly surprised at the depth of Ross and Miles love story. Charley Descoteaux weaved a wonderful story of passion.
Love a HEA.

I love reading about kink, especially discovering new ones, so I had high hopes for this story. It wasn't bad, it has great potential - but it missed the mark for me. I wanted to connect with the MCs, and I did with Ross, somewhat, but for the most part, I only got to know them both superficially. There was a connection between them, but there wasn't much discussion or internal dialogue about it. Ross showed up to comfort Miles in time of stress and - never really left. That's fine, but I also wanted more. More background on Miles, or more play between them, more development of the characters and their relationship, I just would've liked more. The shibari scenes were laid out beautifully (again, I wish there'd been more) and they treat each other well. My biggest issue was with the ending, the intimate scene they shared was wonderful, but the author cut from "it's getting good now" to the next morning, which was jarring, and a bit anticlimactic. I'd have loved to know they at least got their HEA or HFN, but it just seemed to - stop. Overall, this was enjoyable, though I'd have loved more

This was a cute story about Ross, who has lost a lot of weight and ends up losing his current boyfriend because of it since he is a chubby chaser and isn't attracted to his skinner self. And Miles, who is a shibari master. They end up meeting at a club that Ross's best friend drags him to. The chemistry between Ross and Miles is red hot and to me the book ends in a happy for now ending. I'm hoping to see more of these characters. I read this book using the Kindle Unlimited program.

3.5 stars Miles & Ross
I felt that there was simultaneously a lot happening, mainly with side characters or individually, and not much happening together. I think the version I read must have an updated ending as there is a HEA that others and wasn't there. There was very little time with the couple outside of the bedroom.

First of all, heed the trigger warning!!!

After Ross loses nearly 100 lbs, his boyfriend, Brad, breaks up with him because he's a self-professed "chubby chaser" and is unhappy with the changes in Ross' physique. Ross moves into his Weight Watcher pal's spare bedroom and Janet (I loved the friendship between Ross and Janet but that couldn't carry the story) surprises him with a trip to her BDSM club one night in an effort to help him get over his breakup. There, he meets Miles, a shibari master, who asks him to participate in a scene, which he does and discovers his kinky side. So far, so good. I kind of wish I had stopped there.

Ironically with a series name of "Kinky Awakenings" I was disappointed by the lack of kink, lol. Pretty early on the first shibari scene takes place, setting expectations, but I was quickly put off a little bit by how it concluded with a BDSM neophyte being essentially abandoned after a scene, which was just the beginning of the downhill descent. I think there was one other shibari scene towards the end of the book and then another in the epilogue, which I enjoyed but they were too little too late at that point.

This book was a little bit all over the place, like the author just wanted to throw a bunch of plot devices into the book and see what happened. The result is a mediocre romance, without the depth that it deserved. It would have been better served to flesh out the main story rather than adding two additional storylines (a second romance and a lawsuit) that couldn't be done justice. The POV is almost exclusively Ross', with Miles getting the odd chapter beginning nearly halfway into the book, which served to create a strange pacing and didn't really add much insight or perspective. Throwing in a couple sexual assaults that aren't really dealt with in a meaningful way was just icing on this tasteless cake.

I picked this up for free as part of a "Stuff Your Kindle" event and it was a pretty quick read but I'm not in any real hurry to read on in the series or explore the author's other work.
