My Boss is the Devil (The Devil You Know Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 386 ratings

Finding the balance between good and evil is about to require a lot of coffee.

What’s better than being a college dropout twenty-something working as a barista in New Haven, CT? Just about anything.

Nick would give anything to escape the dead-end life he’s made for himself. He gets the offer of a lifetime from Lucifer himself, to trade his apron for a suit. Should he really consider becoming an agent of the Devil? With the way things are going for Nick, of course he should.

Lucifer wants to give Nick a chance to do what he always wanted, to help people, wielding power and influence to make their dreams come true. He would have to sell his soul, but the Devil is a gambling man and lets Nick experience his new life before he has to sign on the dotted line. Can he use the Devil’s power for good, and make his mark on the world, or will he fall victim to his own desires and lose his humanity?

As if that wasn’t enough, the very friend that made the meeting with Lucifer possible turns on Nick, and he needs to do some quick thinking to come out on top. Maybe the ends justify the means, but there are no easy answers.

About the Author

Ben Schenkman likes many things in life: his 20-pound Maine coon cat, his family, his coffee, and his eclectic hobbies—not necessarily in that order.

Ben also likes to play devil’s advocate in his books by exploring the gray areas of good and evil with questions like, “Does the end really justify the means? Or is it all simply black and white?” Ben leaves these questions lingering in the ether to challenge readers’ conventional thinking and delve into the complexities of moral dilemmas.

The Devil You Know Series

I love a good series, but I hate waiting for the next book if it ends on a cliffhanger. The first book stands on its own, intentionally.

I do my best to have each book in the series build on the last, but they each wrap up nicely without making you wait for the next to find out how it resolves.

  • Book One: My Boss is the Devil (December 28, 2023)
  • Book Two: Dueling Shoulder Angels (June 28, 2024)
  • Book Three: Too Many Gods in the Kitchen (October 15, 2024)
Three book covers

Editorial Reviews

Review

"There's a new road to hell, and Ben Schenkman has paved it's slippery slopes with good writing, fun characters, and a new twist on a deal with Devil that will leave you wanting to keep going down the path...just to see where it goes."-Andrew Givler (Sigils), Author of The Debt Collection series

"
Ben Schenkman serves up a devilishly delightful tale of temptation and redemption in this page-turner. Nick's journey from barista to devil's advocate is as wild as it gets, filled with twists, turns, and more moral dilemmas than you can shake a stick at." - Robin Ginther-Venneri, Robin's Review

"This book was completely unique! Yes, we've had "deal with the devil" type books before, but we haven't had one quite like this - if we have, I haven't seen it! I loved everything about Ben Schenkman's book..." -The Literary Apothecary
"Similar to the legend of Faust, Schenkman serves up the classic tale from a fresh perspective." -The Critiquing Chemist

"
Being from the land of crossroad devils, I love a good 'deal with the devil' tale. But I can't remember encountering such a unique (and more importantly), fun spin on the genre. Ben absolutely knocked it out of the park with this one. I always knew that the road to hell was paved with coffee..." -Bob McGough, Author of the Jubal County Saga

Ben Schenkman likes many things in life: his 20-pound Maine coon cat, his family, his coffee, and his eclectic hobbies—not necessarily in that order.

Ben also likes to play devil’s advocate in his urban fantasy books by exploring the gray areas of good and evil with questions like, “Does the end really justify the means? Or is it all simply black and white?” Ben leaves these questions lingering in the ether to challenge readers’ conventional thinking and delve into the complexities of moral dilemmas.

As a native of Connecticut, Ben draws inspiration from his upbringing and college years in New Haven, where his novels take place. When he wants to escape being a writer, he’s a massive foodie who goes on gastronomic adventures, an overachiever who collects degrees in Theater, Nuclear Engineering, and an MBA, or the manager/performer of the fire dance troupe, HVBRIS—you know, the basics. No big deal.

I randomly found "My Boss is the Devil" by Ben Schenkman on Kindle Unlimited and immediately added it after I read the blurb, and I'm so glad I did! I'd been in a slump and wanted to try something out of my comfort zone. It’s the first book in a trilogy and is a mix of fantasy, satire, thriller, and even has a little bit of romance. From the very first page, I was captivated by the sharp wit, humor, and engaging storytelling. The story was both relatable and unique, and the characters are so vividly drawn, you feel like you know them. Each character has their own quirks and complexities, which keeps the story engaging.
I thought the plot twists were fantastic. They weren’t too crazy or unbelievable for this type of story. Schenkman's observations about work, ambition, and relationships resonate deeply, making it both a light and thought-provoking read. I laughed out loud while also reflecting on the challenges most of us are faced with in our work and career choices.
Overall, this book is a delightful mix of comedy and insight, and I can’t recommend it enough! It’s a must-read for anyone who enjoys a clever, funny, entertaining narrative with heart. Five stars all the way! I can’t wait to finish the second book, Dueling Shoulder Angels.

This is my first time reading a book by this author and I was not disappointed.

This was an enjoyable read that definitely pulled me out of my reading slump! The last quarter of the book was packed with action and included some surprising twists and turns. I appreciated the character development of Nick throughout the story, especially with the intriguing addition of free will and its connection to hell.

The novel's premise is incredibly unique. Nick, an ordinary American just navigating life, is presented with a once-in-a-lifetime offer: work for the Devil, find himself, make a positive impact on the world, all in exchange for his soul and free will. The author's thorough research is evident, and I'm eagerly anticipating the next book in the series!

First book I've read from Schenkman and was very pleasantly surprised and the writing quality. Loved the general plot progression as well as the character design/development. While it draws inspiration from Christian Mythology, I don't feel like it's entirely bound to that as it's only source. I enjoy stories about moral dilemmas and this one did not disappoint. Plus it was way more amusing/funny than I expected.

The quality of the narration is above average as well. The voice is clear, engaging, and part of a performance without errors.

The concept had me curious from the start, but it didn’t quite deliver the way I hoped. There were stretches that felt like filler, and I kept waiting for things to pick up. The last chunk did surprise me, but it made me wish the rest of the book had that same energy. It’s one of those reads where the potential is clear—you just wish it went a little deeper.

If you're reading this, stop and go buy the book! You'll thank me. Ben's journey to Hell isn't a slippery slope; it's paved with humor, wit, and twists that will have you chuckling all the way through. Who would have thought that the Devil was so misunderstood? By the end of the book, you'll want to hang out with him and have a few beers. He's just doing his job, right?

Ben writes the characters so beautifully that they quickly become almost realistic and a delight to know. Thankfully, he has book three in the works, so you won't go through that series hangover where you feel like you lost an old friend...for now.

Ben is brilliant but devious in his methods. His writing is as beautiful as his covers. I won't give away any of the plot because I hate spoilers, but I am absolutely, madly in love with this series. Now, go on, get your own copy, and bust out of your reading slump or cleanse your reading palate. This is quite the delicacy.

This was a fun read and helped get me out of my reading slump for sure! The last quarter of the book was action that I didn't see come along with some surprising twist and turns. I enjoyed the character development that Nick has along the way. Adding in the element of free will and tying it to hell I really liked.

The premise of this novel is to unique. Nick, your average American guy just trying to stumble through life, gets offered the deal of a life time. Work for the Devil himself, find himself, do some good for the world, and all it will cost is his soul/free will. You can tell that the author did their research and I can't wait for book 2!

Ben Schenkman's "My Boss is the Devil" is a captivating and hilarious read that hooked me from the first page. Nick, our everyday barista, suddenly finds his ordinary life turned upside down when he's offered a job by none other than Lucifer himself. Talk about a career change!

The witty dialogue and vivid descriptions immediately drew me in. Schenkman has a knack for crafting relatable characters with depth and humor, making you feel like you're right there in the story with them. The plot twists kept me on my toes, and the fast-paced narrative ensured I couldn't put the book down.

One of my favorite aspects is the exploration of good and evil. The author doesn't shy away from these complex themes, presenting them in a thought-provoking and entertaining way. The ending is satisfying, wrapping up the story nicely while leaving room for the next installment.
