Once upon a time, there was a small village filled with red hoods and dark grandmothers. Red hoods were trained to become dark grandmothers and serve the wolf. Twelve year-old Daphine is wary of reaching thirteen, the age at which all red hoods begin to transform into dark grandmothers. Daphine never seems to do things that are expected of a red hood, earning the vicious ire of the very unmotherly dark grandmothers.

After a strange encounter, Daphine realizes that the Wolf and the dark grandmothers are hiding something, causing Daphine to question everything. This encounter precedes a cataclysmic event that disrupts the village. Daphine begins to question the benevolence of the Wolf and the dark grandmothers. During most of Daphine's life, this little girl questioned why she was so strange. Now, she wonders if the dark grandmothers and the Wolf were the strange ones. If they had deceived the red hoods, what was real?
