Growing up alone and in the system forces you to grow up really fast. At ten, I was going on twenty.

My reality was harsh and unforgiving. It didn’t allow much room for fantasizing. To my knowledge, I’d never seen my mother. I’d heard a tale or two of her being a junkie prostitute. Hell, that could make her be any of the many congregating inside of Hell’s gate. My father isn’t any different. I envision him as being a young punk, looking for a cheap thrill, and I happen to be the result of two colliding wrongs. Living proof that two wrongs, don’t make a right.

"Well here we are, " Mrs. Z turned into a dirt driveway. An old-school Cutless sat at the end of the driveway perched atop cement blocks. A decrepit looking wooden house in the background. Three boys, all about my age, jockeyed for position to get a better view into the Impala. The sound of a sniffle broke the long-distance stare down between the three stooges and myself.
