Lorraine Cooper, a wannabe Hollywood starlet in the small town of Pine Ridge, New York, works at the telephone exchange during the week and sneaks off to Blue Moon Lake to practice her swimming skills, convinced that one day she'll leave this town behind and become the next Esther Williams.

Imagine her surprise when she meets Herman at the lake, a former movie monster man, practicing his own aquatic moves in his full costume. Not only is he surprisingly sweet, shy, and willing to listen to her dreams of Hollywood stardom, he's also willing to help her rehearse everything from monster movie chases to swoony romance scenes.
