How could she have betrayed the King’s trust? She was his. When he found out, and he would for he always found everything out, she would be in serious trouble. He might even put her back on the streets. How might she live? Would they still provide for her child?
Clara went to collapse on the bed when she realized that someone had been inside of her room. The chamber was too dim to notice at first, but her bedding was already ruffled and her sheets had been turned down, the letter that she had been given unfolded and splayed across the bed. Her veins felt like ice water. The urge to go swiftly and confess filled the young woman. The King already knew. How could he not? Tears began to well up in her eyes.
“I won’t tell him. If that is what you are wondering,” Iona was sitting in the corner, in a thick, luscious chair, watching the entire scene, “As long as you do what I ask.”
“Really? You would do that for me?” Clara was hopeful that Iona would keep all of this quiet, she would do whatever was asked of her. She had come this far in the royal household, after all.
“Absolutely, we all have our own little secrets. As long as you become a part of mine, I won’t say a word about yours,” Iona purred as she stood and crossed the room, running her hand through the young wet nurse’s hair.
Clara gulped and nodded, not quite sure what she was getting herself into.
“Great, I will have the gowns sent to your chambers and I will let Cailean know that I have reserved you for tomorrow night. We will be having an exclusive party at the residence to the Duke of Hanover. Who knows, perhaps you will rub... arms with someone you always wished to! It will be fun, you’ll see. Everyone is always there,” Iona explained before walking out of the door, a smile on her face.
