Freed Bird was written in Chinese and translated to English. While penned by an author from a minority group in China, this is the story of Americans Careling and Carrie and set primarily in the U.S. Thus, it offers the unique perspective of an outsider's take on American life and culture.

In this story, Careling serendipitously meets Carrie for the first time when they both land in a Thai prison while traveling overseas. Careling is immediately drawn to Carrie but their lives are soon pulled apart almost as quickly as they had come together. That is, until they are miraculously brought together again and begin a journey of discovery, sacrifice, and healing.

As the friendship between Careling and Carrie grows, past family secrets long kept hidden begin to come into the light. The two young women find their lives increasingly intertwined, but first an immense sacrifice is required of Careling before they can go any further.

Freed Bird explores the burden of long-kept secrets and bitterness, and the healing which vulnerability, love, and forgiveness can bring.
