The Great Wave tells the story of a Japanese family, from when the Russian island of Sakhalin was a Japanese colony, through the chaos of World War Two and the Soviet invasion, down to the bitter legacy of the present.

At the heart of the story is Kestrel Shearwater, an American academic living in Japan. She's asked to help a local man find out why his daughter has been arrested in Russia for murder. It's clear she has killed a man, but no one can work out why, and she won't tell.

What unfolds is a search for a lost legacy across the decades of war, natural disasters and personal loss that have swept across a Japanese family.

Kestrel becomes drawn into the maelstrom, at great risk to herself. Will the great wave of history take her down with it, or will she solve the mystery of what drove a woman to kill?
