Dr. Mark J. Britzman
Dr. Mark J. Britzman is a licensed psychologist, professional counselor, and tenured professor of Counselor Education. For more than three decades, he has devoted his career to helping individuals, couples, and emerging professionals grow toward greater clarity, character, and well‑being. He is also a nationally recognized speaker in character education, known for his practical, compassionate approach.
Mark was selected as a William Glasser International Scholar and continues advanced training and supervision in Choice Theory, while building on a foundation created by Alfred Adler.
He views ongoing learning not as an obligation, but as a privilege — a way to keep his skills sharp and to collaborate with colleagues around the world who share a commitment to meaningful, evidence‑based practice.
Throughout his career, Mark has found his greatest professional satisfaction in supporting the development of his graduate students, many of whom now serve in impactful roles in their community. He has led character development seminars nationwide, expanded a pre‑marital program that has supported more than a thousand couples, and worked with colleagues to secure over one million dollars in grant funding for innovative educational initiatives.
His contributions have been recognized with the South Dakota Counseling Association's highest award for service to the profession, as well as the Outstanding Teaching and Research Award from the College of Education and Counseling at South Dakota State University. While grateful for these honors, Mark views them simply as reflections of the teams and communities he has been fortunate to work with.
Most importantly, Mark strives to live the principles he teaches. He knows that real life is far more complex than any self‑help formula, and he considers himself a lifelong work in progress. His mission is simple and steady: to use his compassion, curiosity, and encouragement to help others discover their strengths and move toward the lives they hope to create.
