SPFBO8 Semi-Finalist 2022

When Princess Hette refuses a sorcerer’s proposal, he retaliates by stealing her heart—literally.

Desperate to resist his influence, Hette makes herself emotionless, stifling all feelings until she can find her heart and win it back. Only Konrad, the despised Court Fool, knows where to find the sorcerer, and he has his own curse to battle.

Riddles and magic plague their path, including a memory stealing witch, an unbeatable knight, and a magic book that would as soon drown them as lead them to their destination. Yet, if Hette can’t find the sorcerer in time, her heart will be the least of her losses.

Inspired by the folktale The Princess Who Never Laughed

“Lush in details, rich in characterization, and written with (forgive me) heart, Heartless Hette is far more than just another rewritten fairytale. This is many fairytales woven into an epic quest, one that will test Farb's characters and delight readers for generations to come.” -- Jennifer deBie (rosieamber.wordpress.com)

About the author

M. L. Farb

Who are you?
I am the author of noblebright fantasy and retellings of less known fairytales.

What is Noblebright?
For years I’ve searched for books by the broad terms of “it is like the works of CS Lewis or Tolkien”, “complex and flawed characters who try to do what is right and have huge growth arcs” and “the story has a hopeful ending even if the characters still face challenges.” Noblebright is a single word description of what I was looking for. To my great delight, readers have compared my novels to the works of CS Lewis, Lloyd Alexander, and Shannon Hale–each who write noblebright stories.

Why less known fairy tales?
Over the years I’ve read thousands of books to my children, including many folk and fairytales from around the world. Many of those stories leave me with questions, like for Vasilisa, “How did she get so strong?” Also, I love to research and build stories based in different parts of the world.

Who are you?
I am the author of… Oh, you mean, who am I outside of being an author? I’ll keep this short, because you have more important things to do, like read.

Ever since I climbed up to the rafters of our barn at age four, I’ve lived high adventure: scuba diving, hiking, rappelling, rock climbing, and even riding a retired racehorse at full gallop—bareback.

As a youth, I made up stories to help my little sisters go to sleep. It backfired. We stayed up for hours continuing the tale. The King’s Trial was born in those late, whispered nights.

I earned a bachelor’s degree in English and Music Composition a couple months before my oldest child was born. Now I am the published author of many novels and no music. However music heavily influences my writing, helping me create poetry and lyrical stories.

I live a joyful and eclectic adventure with my husband and six children.
