Danyel Ke'Veron was only a child when his family survived the crossing of the Churning Sea to escape the brutal Empire of Koth. Now a young man, he expects a life of dull but peaceful subsistence in the new lands of An'Terat, where tensions run high between the exiles and the native Terathi. But when the tentative peace is shattered by an act of violence and Danyel suffers a crippling loss, that future becomes impossible.

Drafted into the militia for a conflict he doesn't understand, Danyel discovers that his future is even more uncertain when his awakening magic destroys friend and foe alike on the field of battle. He must master this newfound power or be destroyed by it. When his commander sharpens him to a deadly weapon, he will have to decide: is this a just war, or the machinations of something darker?

Magic itself is rebelling. An ancient evil is stirring. To insure the survival of two peoples, Danyel will have to seek out the most dangerous place in this new world, with an ally he isn't sure he can trust to quell the coming disaster.
