New Zealand lies at the bottom of the world - the Maori called it Aotearoa, land of the long white cloud. Sandy beaches, rugged mountains, wild rivers, thick bush, and rich bird life exist with ever-changing weather and the threat of earthquakes. The year is 2011, and a massive earthquake has rocked Christchurch, New Zealand. Order is quickly breaking down. Eighteen-year-old survivor Aaron Thompson leads a party of teenagers and children out of the devastated city, only to find themselves back in the fourteenth century. The group must learn to survive in a strange world, aided by new friends River and Skye who help them adapt and form a new society.

But evil lurks in the mountains where Ulrik, a self-serving narcissistic dictator, sends out raiding parties to populate his compound with captured natives and survivors from the broken city. As intrigue and a looming battle threaten to destroy the new lives they have built, another earthquake strikes and thrusts Aaron back into his own time. There, he must prove that the five years in the fourteenth century were real as he connects with someone linked to the past he just left.
