About the author

Chris Casey

Chris Casey has spent more than three decades at the intersection of technology, politics, and advocacy, helping shape how public officials, campaigns, and organizations use digital tools to engage and mobilize people.

He began his career in the early 1990s as a staff member for Senator Edward Kennedy, where he helped launch the first congressional website—an early step in bringing the United States Congress online. He later worked with the Senate Democratic Caucus and the Democratic Technology & Communications Committee to expand the use of the internet across Capitol Hill at a time when its potential was still largely unexplored.

After eight years in the Senate, Casey moved into political and nonprofit digital strategy. He founded an internet consulting practice supporting Democratic candidates and organizations, and later served as Director of New Media Services at NGP VAN, where he led teams developing digital tools and advising clients on online engagement. His work has also included leadership roles in nonprofit advocacy, building and supporting campaigns on issues ranging from public health to civil rights and environmental protection.

Casey has been part of digital teams supporting multiple Democratic National Conventions and has contributed to the evolution of online campaigning and advocacy from its earliest days to the present. His work has been recognized with industry honors including Pollie, Reed, and Golden Dot awards, and he has been named among the most influential figures in early web and political technology.

He is the author of The Hill on the Net: Congress Enters the Information Age (AP Professional, 1996). This 30th anniversary edition revisits that original work, reflecting on how dramatically Congress—and the internet—have evolved since those first steps online.

Originally from Huntington Beach, California, Casey is a lifelong beach enthusiast who believes every visit to the ocean should leave it a little cleaner than before. He is married and the father of three adult children.
