Richard Philip
Richard Philip is an author and musician currently based in Singapore. He has published both fiction and non-fiction work. His non-fiction includes How I Walked Into a Story and Came Out With a Song: A Journey Into the Invention of Music from Words, a book of practice-based research that explores and describes the creative process involved in engaging with texts to produce music - a groundbreaking, pivotal work that positions empathy, or seeing through the eyes of others, as an important force in human creativity. Philip has also worked as a professional journalist for several years during which he published current affairs and medical news stories. In terms of fiction, Philip's novel The Bending of Strong Forms was published in January 2021. He has written several short stories, one of which, titled, Mutton Curry, was shortlisted for the Fish Short Story Prize 2017/18, and placed on the Honorary Mentions list of the 2018 Lorian Hemingway Short Story Competition. He has also written scripts for dramatic works, which he co-directed with his wife and fellow artist, Soo-Leng Law. His music was featured in a compilation album released in Los Angeles in 2007. He holds a Master of Arts in Music (with Distinction) from the Waikato Institute of Technology in Hamilton, New Zealand, and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Communication from the Singapore University of Social Sciences.
