Monmouthsire-born John F. Francis was an experienced sports journalist, covering many world title fights before obtaining a First Class Honours degree in History/Welsh History (winning prizes for social and economic history and Welsh history) and completing a Ph.D.concerning migration from the West Country of England to Glamorgan in South Wales.
