Thirteen is not her name: She doesn't know her name. Thirteen is the number tattooed on her neck. Why is it there? She doesn't know that either. Much of who she was is missing after her memory was erased during her escape from the company experimenting on her.

The things Thirteen doesn't remember could kill her; certainly the paramilitary security force pursuing her and her own astonishing powers might. There may be one person who can help, but they are a ghost; no location, no identity, and no appearance. Only their name suggests a link: Twelve. But without her memory, Thirteen can't be sure. The only thing she is sure of is that she's keeping her freedom, whatever the cost.

The destruction and body counts soar as her clashes with the security force become more frequent. With each fight, she discovers more questions. It soon becomes clear that the only place that might have all the answers is the place she just escaped from.
