Why is it important to tell stories?

Science has shown that narratives have an invaluable utility: they make us more empathic, more willing to understand and listen to others, more able to name our feelings and anxieties and to deal with them. In short, more suited to life, better at moving in society.

It is through stories that we give meaning to the experience, that we are able to transform daily routines into moments worthy of being remembered.

But there are also psychological reasons behind it. Our brain is predisposed to organize the chaos of events and stimuli to which it is continually subjected into a narrative structure. It is therefore programmed to attribute meaning to the input it receives and this innate tendency is reinforced by the fact that we are used, from an early age, to listen and tell stories.

If we think about it, in our life, we do nothing but tell ourselves. The story of our experiences, our strengths, our defects defines not only who we are in a reflective sense but also has an important social function because it allows us to understand others.

Stories are not just trivial diversions through which we escape from reality but rather projections of hypothetical scenarios that facilitate the reading of the surrounding world.

How do you tell a story?

Stories teach us about life, about ourselves and about others. Stories are the past that arrives through communication to future generations, they are tradition, they are the ability to involve your interlocutor and transform him into a part of history itself. Storytelling is a unique way for students, workers, people in general to develop understanding, listening, the ability to communicate respect and appreciation for other cultures. Storytelling can promote a positive attitude towards people from different countries, races and religions, and can become a fundamental tool for affirming oneself, in all areas of one's life.

When we listen to or read stories we get excited, we feel involved by binding ourselves to characters hating others as if they really existed. And this is precisely the effectiveness of storytelling: being able to convey emotions to people.

This is why, evolving over the centuries, storytelling has acquired a fundamental role in today's world, in areas such as marketing, politics, in any working environment. If you are able to get listened to, and you can engage and persuade the people in front of you, then your story will be effective, and your strategy will be a winner.
