A Holy Land Devotional

When you think of the land in which Jesus spent His life on earth, it may feel very distant to you. And sometimes our ideas of God’s Word can be inaccurate simply because our ideas of Israel’s landscape are incorrect. In his book Thirty Days in the Land with Jesus: A Holy Land Devotional, Charles H. Dyer brings the Holy Land into our living rooms. Nothing will replace an actual journey to Israel, but Dyer has brought us the next best thing: a devotional tour with startling truths and sharp challenges.

Mr. Dyer has spent years studying in Israel, and comparing landmarks and towns in Scripture. This thirty-day devotional brought to life for me thirty specific events in Christ’s life that I will never view the same again. In my mind’s eye, I will carry with me the photos and descriptions as I read God’s Word.

In one chapter, Dyer describes Nazareth to be a village built almost in a bowl that was hard to access up steep slopes all the way around. In another instance, he points out errors that tradition introduced us to—like, “the traditional tomb of David is actually on the wrong hill,” and Charles Dyer tells us why.

But it’s not all tour and landscape. The author brings us closer to Jesus Himself through applications at the end of each chapter. Because I sensed Dyer’s own closeness with our Lord, reading his words have caused me to contemplate my own closeness to Jesus, with places and passages from the Bible in clear view.

Charles Dyer was provost for Moody Bible Institute for ten years, and is now a professor-at-large, teaching the Bible, and speaking as a radio host. His other books highlight the principle behind this amazing devotional: the land of Israel isn’t just a place, it’s a place about a Person. This Person is Jesus Christ, and He is the Savior of the world!

Whether you’ve been to Israel or not, I urge you to read this short chapter book. The Holy Land will take shape for you, or remind you of places you’ve traveled—from the words of a casual and entertaining expert. Thank you, Mr. Dyer!
