In the late 1960s-a chaotic time of war protests and racial tension- Savannah Donovan and her family move to Fisherville, Tennessee. Within her alley house, she feels out of place. Though she's not abused, neglected or orphaned, there's a persistent, sense of being adrift in an ocean of insignificance. After her overbearing-and racist-dad is unexpectedly arrested, Savannah decides to step outside of prejudicial boundaries and forge a true friendship with a new girl in the neighborhood-named Frankie.

As she grows up, she forms close ties with the Vivaldis,- a Christian couple of Jewish descent-who befriended her family years earlier. Eventually, she becomes disillusioned by betrayal, grief, hardships, and prejudices. Despite the Vivaldis' kindness and godly love, unresolved bitterness and sorrow in Savannah's heart sends her on a darker path than she's ever known. Will she stop running from the truth of God's love and become free to discover who she's meant to be?
