Born in the fertile plains of the former Yugoslavia, Katharina and her family became victims of ethnic cleansing during the latter part of WWII. They managed to escape via Hungary to Austria, where, like Leni in this story, Katharina in her late teens, emigrated alone to Canada. On the north shore of Lake Athabasca, she met and married a Spaniard. Eventually, they settled on the West Coast of Vancouver Island then Victoria, where, Katharina still resides
