The story resumes fourteen years earlier, with a young Hannes Bannerman serving as a woodranger on the backworld N'Beljum. After an ecological disaster, Bannerman makes his way offworld, where he meets a talented man and a beautiful woman whose lives will forever be entangled with his own.

The true roots of the story go even farther back, to a revolution on the oppressed factory world Steel.
