The late-afternoon sun sat low over the desolate mountain town, and it was getting harder to see. Savannah squinted into the pale light, one hand clamped to her forehead, as she trudged up and down endless dirt roads, checking each house against the image on her phone.

She was hot and dusty and tired, and her feet ached like crazy, but she couldn't think about any of that right now. Her mate was here somewhere, amid these forbidding, dark-wood houses, and she had to find him before it got dark.

Which wasn't very far off.

A little knot of nerves in her stomach was spreading like a prickly rash, raising the hairs on the back of her neck and filling her with foreboding. This wasn't the peaceful rural town she'd expected, but a broken-down, half-abandoned ghost town. Everything about it told her to run back to her car and get the hell away.
