Discover what heaven is really made of in this delightful story by award winning author, Blythe Ayne. ____________ Excerpt from "What Heaven is Really Made Of": When they got in Cheaper Drug Store, Minute started browsing for little tools. She always looked for tools that fit in her hands. Right away she discovered a pair of little slip-joint pliers. "Hey," Daddy said, "those are cute!" "Yeah." He put down the hatchet handle, and Minute handed him the pliers. "Don't think I've ever seen any slip-joints so tiny, and good quality, too." "Yeah," Minute said again. She looked up and saw Daddy was thinking about getting them for himself. "Last pair, and only $2.75," he said. "You like them?" Minute asked. "I guess I don't really need 'em. But this little guy could get into a lot of knuckle-busting corners." He turned the pliers over in his big hand, then put them down. "You're not getting them?" "Well... I'd better stick to the list." He went back to the hatchet handles. "I'm going to look at fabric," Minute said. In the sewing section a sign over the pattern books declared: "All Patterns – 50% Off" Too good to believe! But the slip-joint pliers for Daddy wouldn't get out of her mind. When would she be in town again when patterns were 50% off? But when would she ever see such good quality little slip-joint pliers for only $2.75? If she only had thirty cents more, she could have both. But if she asked Daddy for the money, he'd be suspicious. Minute went to the Butterick pattern drawers and pulled out the pattern of her heart's desire, then went down the aisle and turned the corner. There Daddy stood, holding the little pliers again. Right then the pharmacist called his name. Daddy set his sack of nails down and put his other hand over the little pliers – they were safe between his two calloused hands. He sighed as he put the pliers down, picked up his bag of nails and headed to the pharmacy in back. Minute turned too. She ran to the pattern drawer, replaced the pattern, then hurried to the tools. She grabbed up the little pliers and scurried to the check-out counter, squirming from foot to foot while people in front of her paid for their goods. Everything would be ruined if Daddy came up front before she paid for the pliers....
